Please, Buy a Safe. And Use It.

    Hello Everyone,

In light of the very recent events, I would like to ask all fellow gun owners to please go ahead and buy that safe that you've been thinking about getting.

I think we can all agree that as things are getting crazier by the hour, the chances of copycat behavior and other overreaction is very high.

Please, lock up and secure your guns, especially if you have children and/or young family members at home. I know it is an expensive item and it can be difficult to bring home. But it is very much needed right now. Ask for help if you must.

You don't want to find yourself in a situation where your unsecured firearm was used to harm or kill someone.

The safe is also a worthwhile investment as guns and ammo have become very hot commodities. The chances of theft are much higher.

    Be safe.

    Thanks,
    Project Howa Ya Doin' .308

Although I have a safe I think it is more important that you keep your list of friends and acquaintances that know about your stash to a minimum. I don't know to which copycat situation you are referring to but most burglars are motivated by one thing, selling said stolen items in which case that has always been a possibility. I didn't start locking my doors, clearing my car and looking out for strangers in my neighborhood just in March of this year.

It truly is a great idea to keep all guns and all ammo under heavy lock & key when not in use.

Getting all form of Emergency Equipment into action at the appropriate time takes some planning.

No clue what "copycat behavior" behavior you're referring to.
I agree a good safe is great and a worthwhile expense, however it's only one piece in a security system and security mindset.

At the moment, I think it's safer and better for your security to start bringing your guns out instead of locking them up.

Luckily this is America and each person can research, plan, and decide what's best for themselves.

I agree get the best safe you can and just in case there's someone out there that thinks they spent all their available funds purchasing their guns and ammo I'll tell you about the trick I learned in Hawaii, where sometimes shipping heavy items like safes gets expensive.
It's not the best option but it's better than nothing, when you're not around to secure your firearms personally.

Again Only do this if I have absolutely no money to buy the least expensive professionally-made safe that is available to you. ...

You can get an old refrigerator, maybe the older the better, off of Craigslist or wherever, it doesn't even have to be functioning properly, clean it out thoroughly, then buy and install a high-quality padlocks and lock hasp equipment that can't easily be defeated, preferably you'd want it set up for at least two locks or more. (One lock might keep kids out and two locks might make a professional go in from the back side.) If your refrigerator has hinge bolts on the outside you can round those off with the wrong size socket, a file, or just replace them with round head bolts, nuts and washers. Maybe even drill a few small holes for ventilation from the back.

This is a quick do-it-yourself project, once you measure the size of the bolts and washers you will need.
You should be able to spend very little and because free broken refrigerators come in all sizes you could get a smaller dorm type refrigerator, if you only had hand guns and/or some ammo.

Of course the back and the bottom won't make it 100% secure but in reality nothing man-made is.

You could put a note on it like "Spoiled squid for shark fishing, do not open!" " lunches I've stolen from work but I think they spit in. "
or "Walt Disney's remains do not open until 2027 !!!"
Whatever you think might work or get a laugh.
You could even put a refrigerator box over it to hide it in your garage or even make a fake plug to make it look like it's plugged in and running.

Is it better than a cheap safe?
No, but it's better than nothing.

              * legal disclaimer that my lawyer's attorney makes me say*
I'm not telling you how to safely store your guns, I'm just suggesting you save up and buy the best safe you can afford.

Excellent advice I have been preaching for decades. For the record I own three safes.

When my collection was smaller I did not have a safe but my guns were locked in individual gun boxes. That would not have helped in the event of a burglary but it did keep kids and honest people from messing with them. Several years ago I bought a very good safe and since then all of my guns except my HD gun are locked up all of the time.

Agreed! And bolt that thing to the framing of the house.

But, but, but......my super-secret hiding places under the bed and in the closet behind the bathrobes and shoe boxes has been fine for years.

When my home was burglarized 6 or so years ago my gun safe protected my firearms from ending up on the street.
It also protected jewelry, cameras, coin collection, cash, important papers etc.

Buy a safe bigger than you think you'll need, once you start filling it, it will fill up faster than you think.
