    Shipping a firearm HELP!!!

I recently sold an AR on GunBroker to a gentleman in Oregon. However I have never done this and have no idea how to proceed. Do I ship on my own or do I need to pay an FFL to ship for me? Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks

You can ship it your own, as long as his FFL accepts from a private party. Box it nicely, include a copy of your driver license, I also print out the Gunbroker sale invoice, take it to the post office. It's not required, but I usually e-mail the receiving FFL "Hi, I sold a rifle to one of your customers, Hugh Jablonski, I shipped it today, it should be there on Friday."
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

^^ What he said. For ars i separate upper and lower and wrap and ship in shorter box. More compact box means makes it less likely to flex. Usps and ship with insurance buyer pays shipping anyway. I double up a layer of cardboard on inside of box to make more rigid .Wrap ar with and old sheet or towel

I just sold an extra S&W Shield to my brother in Oregon. I just went to my LGS and he handled most everything. A little spendy with transfer fees and shipping but I walked out with everything under control.

There is a lot of difference between shipping a rifle and handgun. Rifles are easy. AR take it apart and wrap both pieces in bubble wrap. Box it up including a copy of your DL and the buyers contact info. Look on the ATF website for the name of the FFL he wants it shipped to and only send it to that address. Mail it at the post office. Don't tell them it's a gun. Just some metal parts nothing liquid etc. Insure it if the buyer is willing to pay for it.

I would agree up until the don't tell them its a gun part. Heaven forbid it gets lost and you have to use insurance. By USPS regs you have to declare what is inside if asked and they can decline reimbursement.

OP, take gun apart, bubble wrap the parts and put in sturdy box. Include a copy of your DL inside with a note on whom its being transferred to and mail USPS REGISTERED mail with full insurance. Registered mail will already require an adult signature. Then as a kind gesture, give the buyer the tracking number. Done. I just went thru this and it was painless. FYI, this is for a rifle not a handgun.

True, but I was glad to cover it. First time I've done this so I wanted to be sure to follow the legal protocol. Plus, I don't have a problem patronizing our LGS, they are really good people.

Yes for insurance you need to declare that it's a gun. I've shipped several with no insurance and never had a problem. It's always a crap shoot with the counter help. Way back when my wife went to pick up a signature required package at the post office my first DCM M1. The clerk asked what it was and my wife said a gun she went ballistic and said you can't ship a gun through the mail. My wife pointed out she didn't ship it the government did so it must be legal. First time I shipped one the counter lady threatened to call the cops because I brought a gun into the post office. Manager straightened her out. Yeah sure declare what it is and pay the insurance it's your time and money waste it however you want.

I have used FedEx for rifles and handguns.

I think FedEx stopped shipping firearms and UPS 2nd day air took their place.

Since it's a long gun, check the online quote tools for FedEx, ups, and USPS. Their rates vary greatly, at the time FedEx was the cheapest for me.

Pay for the label online, print, and drop off at a hub (if using FedEx or UPS).
