I am old enough to have been through a few of these ammo times. When the good times are back, buy lots and stack deep and keep shooting. I am not hoarding, I will use 100% of what I have but it may take me a few years.

Just a wild, crazy, bizarre and extraordinary jump to conclusions here but....

...did it ever cross your mind, or of those replying to this thread, that he advised the cashier the DISCOUNT was $1.00 per box?

As in; a $1.00 off per box?

Happened to me. Not saying I'm the guy in this fascinating anecdote, but yep, the manager told the cashier "$1.00 per box" - and that was the discount, and she knew what he meant, and rung it up that way.

The end - and Goldilocks felt that was just her right size.

Unless he was talking about the background check fee which IS $1, but not PER BOX.

Around 20 years ago, Cheaper than Dirt was selling 22 Colibri ammo for $2 a box.
That would have been a fairly good price for the ammo in 50 round boxes at the time because it's a specialty ammo.
The ad had a picture of a brick though.
I didn't want to call and ask because I was afraid it might be a pricing error for the bricks so I simply ordered 8 boxes, just in case it actually was a 50 round box and not a 500 round brick.
I tried to order more as soon as my shipment arrived, but they were all sold out.
I still have at least 5 of those bricks.

$1 per box of 9mm sounds about right to me.

So that will be one dollar for the box and another .12 cents for tax.
If you want any cartridges for that box, well, that will cost you more.

20 years ago I was buying 100 rounds of Winchester white box 9mm for $9.99 each all day, every day. I thought .45 acp was pricey at $19.99 per 100 round box.

It's the same way when my guy tells me a PMag will be $300. I ask him how many ounces of gold comes with it.

Just went last week to my local bass pro and they had the white box for 12.99 for 50. I took 8 boxes.
