    9mm - $1/Box?

So I finally found some 9mm ammo and yes I paid for it alright.

While waiting in line I spoke to someone about everyday stuff, handguns, ranges, family, the country, etc. Nice guy as I usually run across in these dreaded lines. Although he didn't say what he did he is a small business owner and does carry, not LE or run a range.

He made it to the ammo counter a few minutes before me, but we were pretty much side by side. He asked his guy for a case of 9mm, then thought for a second and said, "no, make that 2 cases". I asked mine how much per box of 50rds of the same brand and was told $16. At that price I couldn't afford too many let alone a case, but enough for a few times at a range. I asked if there were any price breaks in bulk or after so many boxes. They said "no".

We both ended up at two separate checkouts, again side by side. As I was about to pay for mine the guy helping him puts his cases on the counter and says to his cashier "$1 per box". I thought to myself, "WTF?" No wonder there's a shortage. I didn't ask as it's just not me, but it's been bugging the heck out of me for a couple days now.

How do people get such deals? I'd love to know if anyone here can enlighten me?

BTW, still looking for more quality range ammo, but much less than $16/box.

Guy was probably joking around, without seeing his receipt, you got nothing.

        Agreed.

In this market, even if one were to buy a pallet, no way anyone is selling 9mm at $ 1 per box. Likely just joking around...

When I'm paying a premium because of a shortage that could be caused by hoarding I won't "MYOB", would you? Wouldn't you be the least bit curious? Admittedly, there's a lot I don't know and why I enquired?

You guys may be right and I missed the smile or wink.

Hey Op, a least you had it available to buy. I just took a trip to SE Washington state. I went in one chain store in Walla Walla that had 9 - 50 round boxes of 9 mm Federal American Eagle. I went in three stores in Oregon - one had 6 boxes of 200 round White Winchester in 9mm plus 3 or 4 boxes of 50 round; one had tracer rounds only in 9 mm; and two had 0/zip/nada.

I must say it was nice to see 2 of the 4 stores have the ammo out on regular shelves and not behind the counter or glass.

I don't get it. The last time I bought any ammo was back in November I think and I got 50 rounds per box for $1 ea. At Big 5 no less- of course it was for .22lr. I admit I have not been paying attention to such things since then- did something happen recently to raise the prices on ammo?

As a newbie, it's totally understandable to think you are getting played because you dont know any better. It happens in many aspects. Try buying a car for the first time. You could be way overpaying without even know it.

$1 a box 9mm doesnt happen. The shop doesnt even get it for that. Ammo typically has a very small margin. Shop may pay $14 per box and sell it for $16. The market and raw materials drives the price.

We are all glad to see more people join the 2A club. When there is a booming economy and very little ANTI 2A legislation being proposed, pricing is very low and you can find 9mm for $9-$10 a box of 50 fmj. It's not the stores screwing you, it's the politicians.

If you think buying 2 cases of ammo at the peak of the market is hoarding....

                        nevermind, I won't say it.

Or the upc on the case and the box is the same and the cashier did not catch it so the buyer doubled down

                              Joking.

When I buy range ammo in bulk, its $0.18 per round, $18 per box of 100. Good HPs are around $0.50 per round when you find a good deal. $1 per box? No. Retailers don't sell ammo to lose money.
