    PEQ15 or DBAL-A3

I am looking for a laser/illuminator/desginator. I don't care how visible the actual beam is. I'd rather have a clear and visible dot where I am aiming.

I run the ATPIAL-C and am perfectly happy with it. I think the brightest laser/illuminator right now is the MAWL.

In my opinion since the MAWL DA is unattainable.... The LA5 is the big dog domestically made laser that we could buy. The Eastern Bloc stuff is unreliable. Perst....blah.....

The civilian IR lasers are fine for most close applications. However, if you can get your hands on a Mil/LE laser in the 25-30 mW range on high output, you will have a laser that is more useful at distance. They're available out there, but the demand and price seem quite high for some reason.

If your expected range is about 400m or less, an ATPIAL-C is fine. Also, you are most likely limited by your NVG and ability to effectively identify targets much beyond 100m for Gen 3 unless you have really good ambient light. It wouldn't make much sense to spend a lot of money on an IR laser that far exceeds your NVG effective range.

Is NV with a weapon mounted illuminator kosher in California?

If the device itself is weapon mounted and has an integral illuminator, then it is a "sniper scope" and illegal. If the night vision device is weapon mounted but does not have a built in illuminator, it is good to go, even if you attach a separate illuminator to the rifle such as an IR "flashlight"

To the OP, I went with the DBAL A3.

For probably the thousandth time on this site:

              Summary...
Active IR scope with magnification = illegal
Active IR scope with no magnification = legal

Passive IR scope with magnification = legal
Passive IR scope with magnification and an IR illuminator = illegal
Passive IR scope with no magnifcation = legal
Passive IR scope with no magnification and an IR illuminator = legal

Active IR goggles with magnification = legal
Active IR goggles with no magnification = legal

Passive IR goggles with magnification = legal
Passive IR goggles with magnification and an IR illuminator = legal
Passive IR googles with no magnification = legal
Passive IR goggles with no magnification and an IR illuminator = legal

The key here is magnification. A rifle mounted PVS-14 with zero magnification with a rifle mounted IR laser is legal. Put the NVG with magnification on your noodle and it's also legal.

If your looking for high power, it is near impossible to get the military version of the PEQ-15 or DBAL. The civie versions have a 5mW visible laser and a 0.7mW IR.
For affordable high power, look into the Zenitco Perst-3 or Perst-4. They have 30mW visible laser and 18mW IR. I think the Perst-4M might have a 35mW+ visible laser.

My perst-4 definitely blows away my DBAL-i2 in power. Haven't ran it through any combat, so I don't know how this Russian crap will hold up though.
