I began stocking up when CA was going to prohibit off state purchases of ammo unless it goes through an FFL. These would cover both practice FMJs and defense JHPs across all the calibers that I use (9, 45, 223, and 12).

No, it wasn't a BIG purchase - I spread it out across several months, taking a bit of my monthly to purchase bulk... Before you know it, you now have a doable stash.

Now? Why not check online for cheap deals, usually for bulk purchases (with some including free shipping)...? And then find an FFL that charges a fair fee for ammo transfers? OR get yourself an FFL3/COE...?

+1 on this. I was at LAX Ammo as well and they seemed pretty well stocked. Took a bit more than 5 minutes (guy said his system connection was slow for some reason) but I walked out with all the ammo I needed at pretty reasonable prices. I'd say I was in there for about 25-30 min.

            Agreed.

In those hours you spent standing in line or looking for ammo you could of loaded a few thousand rounds for 1/2 (or less) the price you will spend in store.

I typically also buy in person at lax best local selection and usually decent for California prices.

I am however currently screwed. My id expired i renewed online and it never showed up in the mail.
There is no way to contact dmv their online portal says their information doesnt match mine. I waited for an hour outside the dmv before they opened and they said they were too busy too help me.
My ammo stash is slowly dwindling and i cant buy guns or ammo my wallet may like this but i do not.

SG ammo and Target Sports filled my cabinet a couple of years ago when they had good prices and shipped free to my house.

Same. I refuse to pay that $1 to buy ammo.

                      Ditto C&R FFL and COE
                      Plus reload

Can't really go to the range, so it's dry-fire for me.

Honestly, as a fairly new gun owner, I definitely feel your pain regarding ammo. I haven't learned to reload, don't have the equipment, and while I plan to do it in the future, it won't really solve the immediate problem of having ammunition now.

The FFL03 and COE route is also great, but takes a long time, given how slow the DOJ has made things recently. So again, the immediate problem of obtaining ammunition is not solved.

Finding an online retailer to ship to an FFL is more difficult as well, because many LGS are too busy selling out of anything they still have in stock and are making things very difficult for those who want to ship ammo to an FFL. I've called a number of them who find excuses to avoid doing it, or just tell me they are not currently accepting such shipments. From a business standpoint, making $10-25 per 1000 rounds of ammunition isn't worth the effort and time involved when another firearm sale could be done instead. Plus selling the ammo they do have in stock for insanely high margins.

I see variations of these three comments very frequently, and understand the reasoning behind them. Truly sound. But in this environment, for new gun owners, none are useful. Maybe the last one, depending on the FFL.

LAX Ammo has plentiful ammunition for now. The prices are inching closer to range ammo prices, however. Soon you may as well just buy from the range, unless they start upping their prices, too.

One component at a time, in bulk.

They're slow on delivery these days, but they're making MORE - if you're a licensed dealer in CA, or live in a free state and are reading this. I've got another thousand rds. of 62r. FMJ .223 coming from them this week.
