The new law said machine guns couldn't be made any more(1986). That meant only existing ones could be transferred. There are carve-outs for military and law enforcement. Technically anything an 07/02 builds is for the purpose of demonstrating to potential military or law enforcement customers. The truth is in this big country, few sales are actually made. But lots of guns are!

      Ha! An important distinction!

Some say, that enterprising folks in the gun industry <coughSWD> rollmarked and serialized hundreds (thousands?) of flats and then sent in registration paperwork before the cutoff date. Who knows how many weeks/months it took for those flats to be bent, welded, and assembled into complete guns before ATF inspectors were able to get down to Georgia.

I've been told those guns started selling for $200 each, which likely netted a nice profit.

So for $250 a month, we can legally own machine guns. We have to make them ourselves though, right? Or can we buy them from another 07/02? I see lots of non-transferable demo models for sale.

        Hmm.......

Edit: After consulting professor google, I have learned that I cannot have machine guns in CA even if I have an 07/02 because I would need a dangerous weapons permit that is not practical to obtain, to say the least.

In California that is the biggest challenge. Unless you are actually planning on setting up as a LEO vendor, you are unlikely to get the permit is my understanding. Also, it used to be common for individuals that were real enthusiasts to have an FFL 01 but they started pulling those that were not actual dealers being that the intent is that an 01 is a dealer not a collector so they expect an actual functioning business. I was told this is nation wide from the BATFE not just CA but it is hear say, I have no first hand knowledge.

              Well shucks!!

I wonder how many people get plastic "coat hangers" and use them in remote areas then burn them before they leave.

I'm under the impression that if a RDIAS or a Lightning Link is installed, the gun becomes a full auto gun and can't shoot in semi auto until the device is removed, right? And you can only shoot single, two or three round bursts with some practice?

With the current asking prices for RDIAS, LL or even select fire M16, I wonder how many trips to Battlefield Las Vegas can that pay?

From what I read, yes, with no other modifications, the link only allows full auto. I guess if you tapped the trigger you could get out some little bursts

RDIAS allows semi auto fire as it uses M16 fire control group. Swift Link and Lightning link are full auto but you can probably fire 3ish round bursts depending on your trigger finger prowess. The trigger sear will catch the hammer if the trigger is released.

Two and three shot bursts aren't that hard, won't take much practice.

But, as I mentioned above, someone invented some parts to make a Lightning Link select fire. I have no idea how available those are these days.

The truth of it is, if you bought one you would only shoot it full auto. You have a bunch of other rifles you can use semi. If I had one, I would buy a belt fed upper and blow through belts 10 at a time and never worry about "short" bursts.
