Brand New Pistol Question...

"field strip ever 500 rounds" Then I have a problem. I have pistols with over 1500 rounds and do not plan to clean them yet. Maybe if I get bored. They still function perfectly.
My brother had a Sig or H&K that he took to a gunsmith friend to clean after 5,000+ rounds. Yes it was dirty inside. Yes it was still shooting just fine.

If the people who think it must be cleaned and broke down every 500 rounds say they use #9 and it is great then that will explain why they know nothing

You should clean the pistol because new guns often have a lot of grease and other sealants that are to protect it during shipping and storage. I don't do much more than clean and get familiar with the pistol, so stripping down is another way to make sure you see what the parts look like and you can compare it later after you've been to the range.

When you clean the pistol, do not have any ammo nearby. I'd suggest taking a gun handling and safety course. There are many videos on youtube that demonstrate gun cleaning.

DEFINITELY run patches through that barrel!!! That's the LAST place you want ANY obstructions!!! Just wipe down the outside/frame/slide surfaces with a dry cloth, to soak up any excess oils - so you DON'T end up fumbling it!

I clean my guns after every range visit, I always have and I always will. I just like having clean guns. I don't mind maintaining my guns, I actually enjoy it.
I don't have to do this, I choose to do it.

I've already shot Sigs and other 9mm pistols as well, I've just never owned my own. So I'm familiar with the gun already, just wasn't sure of the best practices for a brand new firearm.

Please keep in mind that having previously rented/shot a Sig is far from having actual knowledge about the particular firearm. Especially what to do when the gun malfunctions

While active duty, i periodically shot M9 for pistol quals. But just because I can pull the trigger and throw bullet at a target doesn't make me "knowledgeable" about M9/92FS.

Cosmoline in a new pistol? Yeah right! Sig always packs all their pistols with cosmoline when they ship!

Actually, new pistols are "proofed" usually with 3-5 rounds fired through them before shipping out. This is the final test to determine that a firearm is working and safe. Better guns & semi-customs may have dozens of rounds fired through them.

And no, that's not cosmoline in the gun, it's simple residue because those guns aren't cleaned before being packed & shipped.

Like millions of others when they pick-up a new gun, I usually take it straight to the range to run a box or two of ammo through it before going home for field stripping & cleaning.


Add: I've experienced 2 failures/defects with new pistols and was able to walk straight from range to the sales counter to have them shipped back to the manufacturer. One was a HK P7M8, something broke in the squeeze cocker and a piece of metal fell out. Second was a Custom Shop Kimber. Sloppy sear work caused my pistol to go full auto.

You don’t want my advice: I buy Glocks and Mosins because I treat everything like a Glock or a Mosin... as long as there aren’t rocks shoved in the barrel = GTG!

drive directly from the FFL to any open range and put a couple of hundred rounds through it... when you are done, take pictures & post them to Instagram and then take it home & clean it.

Don't worry about it. Go shoot it and then clean it. Or just go shoot it and lube it. I only clean my pistols every couple of hundred rounds NOT based on how many times I took it out.

Most people just bring them to me for their 1000 round break in and tuning. Once we have completed shooting the 1000 rounds for break in we clean, lube and tune it before returning it to you.

it's a preference. there's no right or wrong in picking what you decide to get whether aerosol or regular bottle, same goes with brands.

i started out using clp (regular bottle), then tried hoppes, bore tech and others. they will all do the job. you will eventually find what you like to use after experimenting with different brands.
