Brand New Pistol Question...

Hello All,
I'm picking up my first gun today from the FFL (9mm Sig Sauer). What are the best practices before I take it to the range for the first time?

I've seen some people who say they completely strip it and even go so far as to give it an alcohol bath before ever shooting it. Is this necessary? Or any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

Go buy an airsoft or pelletgun in same model if available and practice and become familiar with grip, pointing, acquiring sight picture..

Most people just bring them to me for their 1000 round break in and tuning. Once we have completed shooting the 1000 rounds for break in we clean, lube and tune it before returning it to you.

I've already shot Sigs and other 9mm pistols as well, I've just never owned my own. So I'm familiar with the gun already, just wasn't sure of the best practices for a brand new firearm.

just field strip it, wipe it down and lube. you will be good to go after that.

New unloaded gun,
Read the book that comes with it.
Check and make sure barrel is clear and unobstructed.
Oil the slide and wherever else you manual says to lubricate.
Work the slide a few times.
It is ready for range.
Do not take your gun apart too often. That will do more damage than good. Field strip every 500 rounds or so and clean as needed.

I always clean a new gun when I get one but you don't have to clean it like it's had a hundred rounds put through. It's been handled and test fired and there's always some goop inside from the factory.
Practice proper disassembly and reassembly. If you're unsure about this there are plenty of videos on YouTube.

drive directly from the FFL to any open range and put a couple of hundred rounds through it... when you are done, take pictures & post them to Instagram and then take it home & clean it.

Reading the manual and getting to know the names of various parts helps us better answer any questions you may in the future.

It's a good idea to run a few cleaning patches through the barrel to remove any crud that may be in there.

I'll second buying some Snap Caps. You can then do your dry fire practice without risk to your gun.

No live ammo anywhere nearby when you are cleaning, or dry firing.

Yes, clean it before your first range session but have never used alcohol. Your sig doesn't come packed in cosmoline. Just use some CLP.

What is wrong with field stripping often?
Detail stripping I can understand since that is a pain but field strip for cleaning after every firing session is fine.

The only gun I have ever had not work right out of the box was a Tavor x95. The grease/cosmoline was so think inside the firing pin chamber that it wouldn't move. Every pistol I've ever had I run immediately have never had an issue. Sometimes I'll run a gun without cleaning just to see how long it can go without a cleaning and where the trouble spots and possible stopages might be. My revolvers get dirty enough to make the cylinders spin not as smooth as new. My 1911 Rock Island gets so dirty that it's hard to pull the slide. And my AR just gets the bolt really really dirty, my record was 800 and I just wanted to clean it after that.
