22lr is fun because it's cheap. I prefer my ar chambered in that caliber than my bolt action. My Mossberg 146b-a is great for training the kids, and I couldn't pass it up at $125 a few years back, but semiauto allows you to hit steel all day long.

Come to think of it, 22lr is like sex. It's dirty and you are trying to go long and hit the target. So, what are you complaining about?

From the sounds of it the fault is less the caliber/firearms and more the lack of variety in drills/competitions.

I've got a variety of firearms in all manner of calibers, but I still take my .22's out to the range at almost every opportunity. Doesn't matter if its an indoor or outdoor range, .22 LR isn't going to scare any range owners from saying "It's too powerful and could bust the backstop". Most of them are relatively accurate from what I've seen and the barrel isn't shot out. They also still have a good place in the safe because they're what I usually introduce new shooters to using so they understand not every firearm out there is going to produce a loud fireball out the end.

For indoor range shooting I literally just draw 1/2 inch to 1 inch target circles on a 3x5 card, tape it to a regular paper target and try and center punch each of them at about 15 yards. Start it with my CZ 455 bolt action, if that get's too easy, then the Ruger 10/22, and if that's somehow too easy, I crack out the Ruger Standard and try it with two hands before moving to one handed shooting.

For outdoor shooting I can stretch the rifles legs out to 100 yards on the rimfire range and hit targets with boring regularity, so if that's too easy I start picking out specific targets; say the head of the steel rabbit, and if that then gets boring I pick out targets set up at different distances and jump from a steel plate further away, then another one close up, then back out again.

And ironically enough I definitely don't mind the cleaning aspect of .22's, if anything cleaning firearms may as well be therapeutic for me.

At Los Altos Rod and Gun you can rapid fire .22 which is a blast on the pistol and tin can ranges. That's how I get my frustrations out after a frustrating session at the 50yd range.

To me, shooting paper targets at a range using .22LR is boring. I have an Anschutz 1903 and a Kidd Innovations custom 10/22 build, and both are precision accurate. One ragged hole all of the time, but no real excitement.

But I love shooting .22LR in BLM land (now it is private land). We never use paper targets, but reactive ones, old fire extinguishers, tin cans, steel plates, etc. Using my Kidd with a BX25 mag and rapid firing Mini Mags at these objects is fun and cheap, same with my Sig 522 with a Dead Air Mask can. We can easily go through a brick or two of ammo in a session.

RIA has a complete 22 TCM Glock upper that you can convert your Glock 17 to a 22 TCM.

I think that might be the problem. Paper target or steel non reactive is just crap!
