Is a safe required for CA?

Household of 2 adults (one is my partner), is a DOJ safety device sufficient for a rifle, or will this need to be used in combination with a safe?

No safe is required. Generally, CA does not regulate storage by individuals.

Now, if your partner should happen to be a prohibited person, a trigger lock will work, but much more ambitious precautions are required.

    PC 25135
    CHAPTER 2. Criminal Storage of Firearm [25100 - 25140] ( Chapter 2 added by Stats. 2010, Ch. 711, Sec. 6. )

    25135.

    (a) A person who is 18 years of age or older, and who is the owner, lessee, renter, or other legal occupant of a residence, who owns a firearm and who knows or has reason to know that another person also residing therein is prohibited by state or federal law from possessing, receiving, owning, or purchasing a firearm shall not keep in that residence any firearm that he or she owns unless one of the following applies:

    (1) The firearm is maintained within a locked container.

    (2) The firearm is disabled by a firearm safety device.

    (3) The firearm is maintained within a locked gun safe.

    (4) The firearm is maintained within a locked trunk.

    (5) The firearm is locked with a locking device as described in Section 16860, which has rendered the firearm inoperable.

    (6) The firearm is carried on the person or within close enough proximity thereto that the individual can readily retrieve and use the firearm as if carried on the person.

    (b) A violation of this section is a misdemeanor.

    (c) The provisions of this section are cumulative, and do not restrict the application of any other law. However, an act or omission punishable in different ways by different provisions of law shall not be punished under more than one provision.
Also, ammunition, including reloading components, and magazines, speed loaders, and other ammunition feeding devices must be kept locked away from prohibited persons.

If you have kids you might need one. But I think just keeping the little CA approved lock on it would be sufficient. But if you don’t have kids and no one in your house is a prohibited person then you’re good.

“You may be guilty of a misdemeanor or a felony if you keep a loaded firearm within any premises that are under your custody or control and a child under 18 years of age obtains and uses it, resulting in injury or death, or carries it to a public place, unless you stored the firearm in a locked container or locked the firearm with a locking device to temporarily keep it from functioning.

How many guns to you have? Plan to have?

Responsible gun owners have a safe.

But do check your local ordinances too. Your city/county may require something.

If you have any valuable guns, as some of do, then beyond the legal safety issues a good safe could prevent theft, water, fire, earthquake damage.

This, we are in a fight for our rights. Unsecured firearms only help make the case there's no such thing as a responsible gun owner.

A Stack-On cabinet passes muster; don't think you hafta go out and buy a 50 gun $10,000 safe.

No but it's a good idea. But a safe is only as good as your security discipline. I was talking to a guy at the range and he said all his guns were stolen and he was dialing in new ones. When he went down range his wife said it's probably his adult kids. He has a blind spot for em... And if you plan on buying future guns you can just sign a safe affidavit and not have to buy a lock.

Except for that pesky Federal law that requires a safety device for handguns, and BATF refuses to accept the CA safe affidavit.

I guess I've been lucky that my new handgun purchases have come with a gun lock....
