    Gun insurance: suggestions?

    Gentlemen

I was looking for information concerning gun insurance.

I already have house insurance (AAA), but wonder if it makes sense to instead hire a dedicated insurance for my guns, like: https://collectinsure.com/what-we-in...es-accessories

The guns are in a safe, but that wouldn't help much in case of fire (i.e. common damage by firemen pumping thousands of gallons of water in your home) or flood.

Anyone have suggestions on the subject?

Not a gun specific policy, but I have a rider on my valuable personal property policy that covers my wife's jewelry that lists my guns. It was easy to set up, I use USAA for insurance though.

Agreed, it’s an easy rider to add on and while not crazy cheap they’re pretty affordable. Mine even lets me pay monthly.

My guns are covered under my renter's insurance through Travelers. No extra rider required. My guitar is on a rider, due to it's value, and insured separately.

You might want to check with AAA to see if they require anything regarding firearms.

Without a rider you will be subject to the following:

            #1 Your deductible
#2 They will go by Blue Book value, not California replacement value
#3 The will depreciate your gun based on age, unless your policy in general covers replacement cost and then refer back to #2, you will not get California value.
#4 If it is off roster, if you can schedule specific values of your firearms to the rider do so, otherwise they may refer back to #2 again.

The price difference between AAA and CollectInsur is likely substantial. But check your AAA policy. There is a difference between NorCal and SoCal AAA and I hear that NorCal has much better coverage on their general policy than SoCal does. Most home owners policies, however, usually only cover a couple grand for guns.

Beyond that, riders with the standard home owner providers...AAA, State Farm, etc., are usually ridiculously high. I've been with Collect Insure for years and have always been happy with them...but I've never had to file a claim so far. I've also heard that Easter Insurance has good rates too but I've never used them.

I am with Safeco homeowners and their rates are competitive with gun insurance companies. Not all insurance companies will even give riders, or give very limited riders on firearms because they are evil. Mine are on a complete schedule and Safeco even covers breakage as well as theft. I have never used that for firearms, but I have used it for camera equipment and they covered it well.

I also checked with one gun insurance company years ago and asked about coverage. Yes, they obviously cover firearms and you can choose a specfic dollar amount, like $10 K for example. HOWEVER, they also go by blue book values and unless you itemize the values of specific firearms and amounts, they will not cover replacement cost in California. They are no different than a homeowners policy in that respect.

For those of you who think you are insured with no itemization, you would be in for a rude awakening if something got stolen.

I was talking recently to a good friend of mine and she just added a rider to her homeowner's insurance for her guitars, amps and recording equipment. She insisted that I do the same and I know she won't let up so I've been putting together a list. I'm using the internet to estimate the current value of my guns, guitars and amps then I'll probably jack up the total by 15 or 20 percent.
I'm undecided about adding my vinyl record collection which is about 3,600 LPs.
