Interstate travel with guns

Hi folks, my friend and I are thinking about going to Yuma to do some shooting, but we are not too familiar with the laws regarding interstate firearm transportation. Based on my knowledge, as long as the gun we bring with us is purchased and legally possessed in California then we should be able to lock it in the trunk and drive to AZ with it and drive back, correct? I've heard about CA DOJ having special agencies spying on CA car plate in AZ and see if they own firearms. If so they would call the highway patrol to pull ppl over on their way back to CA. In case this will happen, should we bring any kind of documentation/certificate with us so we don't get into trouble? Any kind of tips are welcomed and appreciated ;-)

^^ paranoid nonsense on driving across state lines and they monitor your plate. Only if you go to gun shows and come back. Mostly Reno gunshows. No documentation necessary. There are federal laws regarding crossing state lines locking firearms etc.

The pull over stories involve people with california license plates going to large gun shows in border states, being seen buying 10+ capacity magazines, and then driving directly across the california border. That is what they are looking for.

What firearm(s) are you taking? When i fly with my RAW, i take a copy of my registration letter and i buy magazines wherever i am going and leave them there with a friend, because we cant take +10 mags out of state and return with them.

Very nice. Btw if I want to get into hunting, where would be a good place to start? I did some research on how to get my CA hunting license, will I be able to use it in AZ? Or do I have to pay for a non-resident hunting license? Also, what time in the year would be good for hunting? I've been thinking about getting the hunting license and hopefully will be able to have some fun this year. Thank you!

Welcome to calguns. If you're interested in hunting, a good place to start would be knowing how to shoot well.

So, for the near term, forget about going hunting but PREPARE for it. Develop your rifle shooting skills. Study material related to CA game laws and the hunter safety test. Take a rifle class taught by a professional.

And in the near term, endeavor to acquire both a rifle and a handgun. Acquire a sling for the rifle and become familiar with it's use. Get a good holster for the handgun and wear it, more than likely at home until you learn of places to legally shoot when wearing your handgun holstered.

There's a lot for a new shooter to get up to speed on, but the entire process is fun. Good luck to you.

Get hunter safety first you will need it to purchase licenses in other states as well. Must have license in every state you hunt in.Yuma has great dove hunting. Here hunting is tough on public lands and pricey on private lands. It is a great sport. Been hunting for 58 years. Fort hunter ligget has quail and hogs.;
Some BLM lands hold hogs, deer, quail and turkeys.

I'm in Norcal and go shooting in Nevada all the time. CHP doesn't even have the money to monitor cars with CA plates out of state even if they wanted to do it. Our guns are CA compliant while traveling and when we shoot we remove the grip fins. We also have blocked mags that we pull apart to shoot and put them back to 10 rounds when we travel back.

I'm sure someone can punch holes in some of our logic (mags can be considered not permanently blocked) but that's how we do it.

Just buy a magazine or two for the AK, make friends with someone while shooting, if you like the place, tell them to hang on to it until you come back.

I didn't see mention if these have been made CA compliant or registered. The firearm itself may be more problematic than magazines if you get stopped.

It's perfectly legal to transport any magazine out of CA. The restrictions are bringing them back into CA.
