Your Plan Against a Home Invasion?

What is the strategy/plan you have to ensure your advantage over home intruders? I'd like to plan the worst-case scenario by strategically placing my firearm and ammo, so I can access quickly.


Recently, someone I know was a victim of a home invasion.

Two men (one armed) came in and surprised my friend. He was held at gunpoint while one of the robbers searched his house and took a few valuables.

Luckily, the robbers weren't looking to inflict harm; they've most likely fallen in desperate times.



I recently became a gun owner, first as a hobby, and second, as a means of self-defense.

I know there are a ton of new CA gun owners, and this knowledge can help us prepare for the worst.

I don't have kids at home so I have loaded SD tools quickly available.

First thing don't let them get inside. As to where to place your firearm, why not buy a decent holster and wear it when you're home? I'm willing to bet that no one here other than you knows the layout of your home, or your habits while you are home. So where you put it is going to depend on you.

A few things:

1. Training - If you are a new gun owner, you need to begin building your fundamentals right now. A firearm is NOT a "magic wand" that suddenly makes you invulnerable and protects you/your family from harm, etc.

Deterrents: cameras, dogs, neighbors
Physical barriers: gates, locks, reinforced doors
Alarm system: panic button.
Weapons: whatever is nearby. unregistered sharp stick or a rolled up magazine.

Seriously, my priority is deterrents. Anything else will be a surprise.

I'd be hesitant to share much by way of detail, particularly on an open forum. Let's just say that you start with prayers that you never need to defend your home against intruders. Then, you think in terms of making access difficult (including surveillance and 'hardening' points of entry), creating 'zones' (defenses in depth, which aren't always firearms dependent), a 'castle' (be it the home itself, a safe room, whatever) that is your "Alamo," and avenues of retreat for you and/or your family.

The physical aspects are only a part of it. You must also develop appropriate strategies and train in their use. But, ultimately, there comes a point where mindset plays the most crucial role. If you're thinking that armed robbers who surreptitiously enter a home, uninvited, weren't necessarily looking to cause harm and had most likely fallen on hard times... You've got some work to do.

I have two Lab mixes that would quit barking for a ribeye, maybe even New York strip.

They don't sound friendly until I tell them to shut up.
After that, a bad guys' leg would be likely to get broken from the tail wagging.

Having a G19 handy doesn't hurt either.
