If you are worried about people having access that can't legally have dominion of control over a firearm, be aware that a even a stripped lower still counts as a firearm under both federal and state law. There is no exception in the law where it says certain people can't have access to a firearm, "unless the firing pin is shaved down". Working or not, it's still a firearm.

Safe storage laws and the liability that comes into play of a firearm is stolen that wasn't safely stored also apply to non-working firearms.

There are companies that make high quality replicas that are not considered firearms from a legal standpoint. They are not inexpensive though.

I have chosen to not display firearms for this reason as a few of my extended family should not have access to firearms. I would want to make any display piece into a non-gun before putting it on display.

Here in TX, I have a couple of Marlin lever actions displayed in my office, no mods whatsoever, unloaded, not locked. All of my gun friends here do the same, but none of us have children at home. A buddy of mine, retired doctor, has vintage black powder guns and a small collection of high grade Garands on his office walls, all unloaded, but in working order. His neighbors I have met keep loaded rifles and shotguns in corners of rooms, under couches, on interior gun racks, etc. Different gun culture here.

Our just leave the bolt carrier inserted but stripped of parts... No bolt, no cam pin, no firing pin.
Both options would not damage the gun.
Remove the bolt and the pin

So will the AirSoft, although at least you won't have to worry about anyone getting seriously injured with it.

Remove the firing pin, but a replacement bolt, weld the FP hole, and install.

Better yet, get a 50 dollar barrel, fill chamber and barrel with epoxy, install.

I do not recommend a replica of a firearm left out. It will train you into complacent.

If I was going to display a rifle and at some point I will, I would not over think it. I would render it unusable by removing whatever part I thought best and would not change the outside appearance. If it was an AR I’d just remove the bolt and carrier most likely, leaving the charging handle in it and close the dust cover.
Easiest thing to remove from an AR without changing how the gun looks or hand cycles is the hammer.
The hammer pin can be reinstalled.

It's not a firearm, so there are no storage restrictions.

That would defeat the purpose of displaying the rifle, wouldn't it?

Buy an airsoft gun and paint the orange tip black.

To be more clear, not trying to display any rifle so airsoft, 80%, plugged barrel etc won't work.
I'm trying to display a particular rifle. SO no BCG, or firing pin, removing the hammer, or a lock of some sort etc is the way to go. Just unsure which was best
