    .22LR Question | AR15

Hi all. I just ordered a 10.5" complete upper. I was thinking to build it like I would want for my son (14). Since we are in the great state of Kaliforniastan, I wanted to know If I could full feature with a 22 conversion? Extra range plinker I guess. Is this allowed?

Im building a seperate 223/556 for me and not sure if I had lowers registered if it is allowed to join the 2 pieces without being taken away?.22 conversion but chambered in 223/556?

Thank u all for the info.

No go on the 10.5” barrel. Look up short barreled rifle in Ca. Look for a 16” barreled dedicated upper in 22lr and sell the 10.5 or return it.

So, Ive been doing research and from what Ive gathered. A 10.5 barrel ( yes the barrel) is still considered rifle/carbine length and .22 can be built ( any configuration) just as long as the overall rifle ( fixed stock and muzzle ) is above 26" . No round mags too. im getting both sides and being new. i just really need to look this up some more

Talk to a credible FFL (audiphil here would be a great choice). http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/f...play.php?f=376

I think you're headed down a dangerous path (legally).

No a 10.5 barrel is not a rifle/carbine. It is not legal to build a rifle/carbine with a 10.5 barrel. Hasnt been legal to do so since the 1930s. You would be committing a federal crime if you attach that 10.5 barrel to a lower. If caught with a 10.5 barrel installed on a lower, you are looking at serious federal prison time. Unlike federal immigration crimes, the state would be happy to turn you over to federal agencies.

Only caveat is if you have a pistol lower. Which I am going out on a limb that you aren't exempt (LEO) and able to buy pistol lowers. And you did not buy a SSE pistol prior to 2014. And you did not self build a SSE pistol prior to 2014.

Yes I realize NFA options. But we dont have those options in california.

Just because the upper uses a carbine gas system doesnt make it a carbine. Rimfire in not exempt from short barrel rifle laws.

            EDITED AFTER MISTAKES POINTED OUT:

Also feds say minimum 26" overall length on any rifle.

California says minimum 30" overall length on a centerfire rifle.

California says minimum 26" overall length on a rimfire rifle.

Just but an M&P 15/22. Its completely legal and fun to shoot. You can also put any ar grip and buttstock on it to customize

Thank you for the info. It sounds like I will need to get a new barrel and hand guard, screw the .22 all together. I'll keep the 10.5 for when I move out of this State or if our laws finally swings red.

Happy to help. I'd hate to see a new calgunner get hooked and booked for an honest mistake. That 14yo needs you around.

So making a rimfire rifle that is 27" overall length in California would be a felony as well.
I'm fairly certain that the 30" OAL is only for centerfire rifles, and that rimfire is only subject to the federal 26" OAL restriction.

Another option to use the 10.5" upper would be to buy (make?) a ~6" muzzle device, and have it pinned and welded to the barrel (assuming the barrel is threaded).

Edit: I should add that the shorter OAL for rimfires doesn't negate the 16" barrel length necessary to avoid having an SBR.

I have a few dedicated rimfire AR’s I put together myself. They’re all awesome, very reliable and more accurate than I thought they would be. But after shooting a friends Tippman, I’m convinced this is one of the best off the rack dedicated rimfire AR’s available. Mags are proprietary, which may be a problem for some if you already run the BDM/CMMG type BCG and magazines.

I wasted a lot of ammo running .22LR conversion bolts in AR-15's. I bought CMMG made .22LR barrels and run those now, very accurate.
