As opposed to real estate, where it's location, location, location, with rare books it's condition, etc., and if you need a particular book for reference in whatever field, you pay the going rate.
I'm sure every forensic lab has a copy of Janes, as well as every other noted reference on firearms and ammo.
I paid $450.00 way back when for all five volumes of "The Machine Gun" by Col. Chinn, excellent condition, and I'm glad I did.The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

If it gets used regularly, some books are near priceless in their utility. I know some folks find it hard to believe that a reference could be worth so much, but have you priced factory service manuals recently? Jane's isn't a coffee table book...Comment

Met a similar prof wo had a water chemistry/engineering book. He'd even yell at the former students who would lurk around class the first week trying to sell their old copy they didn't need anymore.
when I was in college my professor dictated that we all would buy the book for the course and would be graded on if we bought it or not...he told us the reason it was importent was that he had written the book for the class and was making money for his retirement from the book sales and it was mandarory....yep you guessed it ......the class was a course on "Ethics" ....true story hard to believe but every word true.If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

New and Improved S***
I had a Political Science professor who had written a letter to the publishing house complaining that they issued too many new editions, making it necessary for his students to purchase more expensive new books. So ... the publishing house stopped sending him free new editions. He shrugged it off. I guess a full professor at UC made enough money."The most hated initials in America today ... TSA."
