Most non-FFL people don't know what goes on behind the scene in an FFL's world. Once I bought an older Essex frame with colt slide from my LGS, watched him" take out " of gunsmith bound book and "put in to" his inventory book, quite a process lots of paper work, you have to respect it. Person doesn't feel comfortable following the rules on one hand but has no problem presenting ID in other situations with lord knows who having access to his ID, perhaps taking up smithing yourself is the answer, next time you buy a firearm at a big box store maybe give some thought to the subordinate that just ask you for your DL, if your that concerned.

we have to log in it and out of the acquisition and disposition book required by the ATF so a ID, DL or something like a passport with a supplemental government document. Was thinking of sending something to a gunsmith to get some machining done for an upgrade. He says he needs a copy of my driver's license. wtf? Is this correct? I am not purchasing a firearm, I would be getting work done an object that is already my private property.ShootSoCal Firearms & Training.

Gunsmiths must be federal firearm licensees, with a type 01 FFL dealer license issued by the BATF
18 U.S.C. 921(a)(11)
Federal firearms licensees must log guns in and out of their possession(11) The term “dealer” means (A) any person engaged in the business of selling firearms at wholesale or retail, (B) any person engaged in the business of repairing firearms or of making or fitting special barrels, stocks, or trigger mechanisms to firearms, or (C) any person who is a pawnbroker. The term “licensed dealer” means any dealer who is licensed under the provisions of this chapter.
18 U.S.C. 923(g)(1)(A)
(g)
(1)
(A) Each licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, and licensed dealer shall maintain such records of importation, production, shipment, receipt, sale, or other disposition of firearms at his place of business for such period, and in such form, as the Attorney General may by regulations prescribe. Such importers, manufacturers, and dealers shall not be required to submit to the Attorney General reports and information with respect to such records and the contents thereof, except as expressly required by this section. The Attorney General, when he has reasonable cause to believe a violation of this chapter has occurred and that evidence thereof may be found on such premises, may, upon demonstrating such cause before a Federal magistrate judge and securing from such magistrate judge a warrant authorizing entry, enter during business hours the premises (including places of storage) of any licensed firearms importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, licensed collector, or any licensed importer or manufacturer of ammunition, for the purpose of inspecting or examining—
(i) any records or documents required to be kept by such licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector under this chapter or rules or regulations under this chapter, and
(ii) any firearms or ammunition kept or stored by such licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector, at such premises.
(e) Firearms receipt and disposition by dealers. Each licensed dealer shall enter into a record each receipt and disposition of firearms. In addition, before commencing or continuing a firearms business, each licensed dealer shall inventory the firearms possessed for such business and shall record same in the record required by this paragraph. The record required by this paragraph shall be maintained in bound form under the format prescribed below. The purchase or other acquisition of a firearm shall, except as provided in paragraph (g) of this section, be recorded not later than the close of the next business day following the date of such purchase or acquisition. The record shall show the date of receipt, the name and address or the name and license number of the person from whom received, the name of the manufacturer and importer (if any), the model, serial number, type, and the caliber or gauge of the firearm. The sale or other disposition of a firearm shall be recorded by the licensed dealer not later than 7 days following the date of such transaction. When such disposition is made to a nonlicensee, the firearms transaction record, Form 4473, obtained by the licensed dealer shall be retained, until the transaction is recorded, separate from the licensee's Form 4473 file and be readily available for inspection. When such disposition is made to a licensee, the commercial record of the transaction shall be retained, until the transaction is recorded, separate from other commercial documents maintained by the licensed dealer, and be readily available for inspection. The record shall show the date of the sale or other disposition of each firearm, the name and address of the person to whom the firearm is transferred, or the name and license number of the person to whom transferred if such person is a licensee, or the firearms transaction record, Form 4473, serial number if the licensed dealer transferring the firearm serially numbers the Forms 4473 and files them numerically. The format required for the record of receipt and disposition of firearms is as follows:Last edited by SkyHawk; 04-04-2020, 10:31 AM.Comment

It sounds like it has nothing to do with OP's thread.
True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.
Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

Nothing 'sketchy' going on; I just don't feel comfortable sending the guy a photocopy of my driver's license for a minor check of an action's timing. (Maybe I didn't mention this - he is not a local gunsmith and I would be shipping the thing.) Got it - it is a BATF requirement. Still don't feel comfortable doing it, so will be learning how to do this myself.
Make sure you let everyone around you at the range know you timed your own gun because, you know, it's easy.
You're willing to send your gun to some person but not a copy of your ID per Federal law?
WTF is going on here? Are you a prohibited person in possession?Originally posted by superhondaz50I should note, I have a hookup..., just trying to determine the cost to put it in.Originally posted by beerman...He comes out while I'm at work to **** the wife..I shall name him Sancho.Comment
