    Gunsmith Requires Copy of CDL?

Was thinking of sending something to a gunsmith to get some machining done for an upgrade. He says he needs a copy of my driver's license. wtf? Is this correct? I am not purchasing a firearm, I would be getting work done an object that is already my private property.

He is correct...he needs to log your gun into his book, UNLESS you stay in the shop while works on your gun UNTIL he's finished with it. That includes if he needs to keep the gun overnight and/or over the weekend or holidays, or suffer-in-place.

That's a federal requirement, and it doesn't matter who's private property is involved. Nothing personal.

I have a problem with that. Scratch that project then. In fact, I think what I will do is learn how to do it myself.

As noted, he needs to log it onto his books and back off the books when he returns it to you.

I had some work done on a rifle, I remember handing him my ID, I figured maybe it was to make sure the guy that drops it off is the same guy that comes to pick up the firearm, along with the claim ticket. Did not think about it too much.

I've never been asked for my CDL or ID for any gunsmithing or repairs. But then again each business can set their own rules.

The rules for logging a gun into a federal bound book are actually set by the BATF, not the business owner.
If you are having work done while you wait, there is no need for ID as the gun is not getting logged into the book.

Read post #3. As has been posted, this rule is from the BATFE. Is your "gunsmith" licensed?

I Dropped of my entire upper but kept the lower at home as I only needed some work done on the gas block at the barrel. They still checked my CDL, I can not remember if they made a photocopy or what, it was over a year ago, so do not remember exactly. But it did not even have the lower.

Nothing 'sketchy' going on; I just don't feel comfortable sending the guy a photocopy of my driver's license for a minor check of an action's timing. (Maybe I didn't mention this - he is not a local gunsmith and I would be shipping the thing.) Got it - it is a BATF requirement. Still don't feel comfortable doing it, so will be learning how to do this myself.

I was talking to a guy who consigned a gun and when it didn’t sell he picked it up and they made his go thru the dros including 10 day wait. Does that sound correct!
