Purchasing a firearm and Real ID

Congrats on finally deciding to take the plunge. I bought my first firearm in early February. Definitely do your research and learn as much as you can on the laws. Also consider and factor in to your budget on how you're going to properly store the firearm and it would REALLY benefit you to get proper training. I recently took a 4-day defensive handgun class and it was the best thing I've done so far.

My biggest concern once I bought my first firearm was to make sure I was a good steward and representative of the community.

Thank you! Sorry I meant to say it has been a couple years since my last purchase of a firearm was made, been an owner of many platforms for a good 10 years. Exactly, real Id didn’t mean anything on the last gun I bought before the virus crisis other than not needing a suitcase full of documents. I still needed two forms of residency proof and CDL. If you don’t have real ID, bring a passport or birth certificate. Real I’d is helpful when buying ammo. Makes that ordeal much easier.

Thats exactly the reason I got my Real ID...so I dont have to bring a "suit case full of documents". Also means I can buy ammo spur of the moment if I'm out running errands, happen to drive by an LGS, Big5, etc., and have the urge or see a deal I can't pass up. I have everything I need to make the purchase without having to go back home, get all the other crap together. Dont have have all that other crap on me as far as documentation. I keep my FSC in my wallet and my vehicle registration is obviously always in my vehicle, so I can keep all the other stuff (passport, birth certificate, SS card, etc.) at home in the safe.

It took a pandemic for my wife to allow to purchase fire arms. I went online, purchased firearms, sent them to my local FFL that lives in town and when went in for a background check, he said he only takes a REAL ID. I have the whole "suit case full of documents" but he will not take it, just the REAL ID. Is this normal for an FFL to take the REAL ID only? The DMV (whole state is closed) and I really want to get my firearms from him. What can I do?

Name the FFL so we can avoid at all costs.

Remember that the California Code of Regulations Title 11 Division 5 Chapter 4 Article 2 Section 4045.1 as posted above by Quiet, is what the CA DOJ requires to perform the background check if you do not have a Real ID. It does not limit what FFL may require.

So, the FFL may say that you must have a Real ID to purchase from them.

Agreed. I think that the way to avoid this problem is to vote with your feet.
