Since the deadline has been pushed to obtain a Real ID in the nation and the DMV being closed, I was curious if is still possible to purchase a firearm with a reg Driver License at a local gunshop. Im sure this question has been answered and someone can direct to the link. Thanks

Purchasing a firearm and Real ID

Sure you can purchase a firearm with the reg ID. Just bring in a certified copy of your birth certificate and/or your passport. Otherwise you had plenty of time to get the real ID. I did last year and transferred a firearm easy peasy.Alfred E. Neuman 2024

You can use any state issued id and one additional proof like car registration or utility bill by local body (not pge)

Also make sure if the address on your driver's license isn't your current address you bring proof of your current address. You can use a utility bill (not a cell phone bill), medical bill, credit card bill, vehicle registration, etc. I used my car title since I paid the car off recently and that was sufficient. Also took my passport with me.
Just do a quick google search and it will tell you exactly what you need.

Before I got my Real ID a few weeks ago, I took everything with me when I bought my handgun in February. Passport, driver's license, birth certificate, SS card, vehicle registration, vehicle title, medical bill, credit card bill. Didn't want to overlook something and have to drive all the way home and delay purchase. It's been so much easier since I got the real ID, otherwise you'll still have to bring all the other required documents with you even if you're just buying ammo.Last edited by Vinnie Boombatz; 04-02-2020, 5:25 PM.sigpicComment

OP, the requirements should all be the same for each FFL, but I would come extra prepared or call your particular FFL and ask them what they require.
I sold a rifle mid Feb and the buyer had a standard CA ID along with DMV registration. FFL also asked for a passport. We called ahead and came prepared.
I don’t remember having to do that on prior PPT’s, but’s it’s possible my other transaction were with people who had Read ID’s.Comment

When I purchased my last two guns, the LGS wanted my CA DL (mine is a regular license that does not say Federal Limits Apply, and has only my PO box Address), and my vehicle registration that shows both my mailing and residence address.
Your LGS may be different, so, as suggested, call first to see what they require.

Thanks you guys! Much appreciated, Just wanted to understand how the new process worked. On the fence on buying a new firearm for a while, it’s been quite a couple years. Thanks again!Comment

Congrats on finally deciding to take the plunge. I bought my first firearm in early February. Definitely do your research and learn as much as you can on the laws. Also consider and factor in to your budget on how you're going to properly store the firearm and it would REALLY benefit you to get proper training. I recently took a 4-day defensive handgun class and it was the best thing I've done so far.
My biggest concern once I bought my first firearm was to make sure I was a good steward and representative of the community.Last edited by Vinnie Boombatz; 04-02-2020, 7:32 PM.sigpicComment
