when i was buying, i requested to pay via Venmo to avoid a trip to the bank during the virus lockdown, but seller insisted on cash. So i went to the bank got the cash for him. You are the seller, you make the rules.

Yes the credit card will offer him protection. I highly advise against this transaction. Buyer may be legit but you will have no protection if he isn't. The only bulletproof method is Zelle. Its an instant bank to bank transfer. Once you've sent the funds, they cannot be taken back (to my knowledge). Verify that first.

I've done it before, although I was the buyer. I didn't have the cash but had enough left on my PayPal credit and there was no way I could pass up an Off Roster 92A1 locally.... Did a friends and family payment on the spot at the FFL before we did the paper work.

If you disputed it with PayPal would they have done a chargeback and taken the $$ back even though it was friends and family?
