Why does every home invasion scenario ever floated assume that you'll be sleeping? Do home invaders go by a guide book that dictates they kick your door in at 0300? Police kick your door in when you're sleeping. Most home invasions begin with a knock at the door.

Was just told by the wife they're starting to do that again. Haven't asked her when she read it or heard it from.

Either way last thing I'd be worried about at 3am or 8pm. JMO

I’ve been in a few life or death situations. Once upside down on a kayak underwater in an ocean squall with 65mph winds, wrapped up in gear leashes, fishing line and exposed fishing hooks.

Yeah, I had enough time to get my knife, cut my self loose, get above water and turn up my kayak. Flipped 3 more times in a couple minutes due to the Wind, still got it upright and saved myself.

So, yeah. I have enough time to do anything I have to as long my life depends on it. Forethought, planning and training. If you don’t have confidence in yourself, that’s you.

Ok, second time I'd been surfing I got hit by a stealth set of waves. Not once or twice but three times in the dishwasher, didn't know which way was up for a long time. Glad we are both still here to talk about it.

We both have our priorities mine just differs from yours. Don't take offense. And yeah, I'm very confident in myself, thanks for your concern.

I believe the odds are 50/50. So far I've had two instances where I heard a noise and felt the need to take a weapon with me. Both times I put on my muffs. It literally takes 1.5 seconds.

And here's the thing...if there isn't time, you can skip them. See how that works. Kinda cool, right? They're there for you if you have time but you can leave them behind if you don't. It's almost like magic!

Mine are a fairly expensive pair with mics on each muff. Sound direction is good with them. YMMV.

While that is true about my Howard Leight(sp?) muffs, My MSA Sordin Pro X have more and better placed pick-up mics - so I can hear a sound and know the general direction of its source. This is one of the subtle differences that top-shelf hearing protections offers. While not a hugr difference, it does actually help a lot.

It's like the difference a high-end scope offers - and extra 15-20 minutes of hunt at dawn and again at dusk, which is a most desirable time to enjoy such a difference.

Well, maybe. It depends on how personally stressful the situation is and how much norepinephrine gets released. Stress inoculation tends to reduce auditory exclusion as well as tunnel vision. While some in shootings report gunshots sounding quiet like a pop gun, others don't. And in large part it has to do with preparation and training.

                          Um ok.
First I'd like to say I respect many of you in this thread.
But when seconds count it's just not on my radar to put muffs on.
I trust my ears, don't have extensive time with hearing protection outside of an outdoor range which is a different environment than inside a home. Hopefully none of us will ever have to experience shooting a weapon in our homes to defend our family or ourselves.

                            NO IT DOES NOT!!

This is dangerous misinformation that can cost people their hearing!

Your body does NOT 'protect' your hearing, what it does is called 'auditory exclusion' which means in a high stress fight or flight situation your brain excludes any information that is not essential to survival.

Your brain will not register the sound but the nerve damage will still happen and so will the resulting hearing loss.
