Be careful to get ALL of the cosmo from around the firing pin so if moves freely.

As noted above, the only thing you need is hot water. Cosmoline has a very low melting point. Plain hot water, ideally under pressure in the driveway work wonders.

I have read and heard of all sorts of chemicals being used. Try plain hot water first. It works well. For small parts I have used the kitchen sink spray attachment. Easy and fast. For larger parts, hook up a hose to the hot water out flow on your hot water tank.

An added bonus, the parts come out almost completely dry from the heat. Do use a liberal coating of quality gun oil.

Never had an issue using plain hot water on the stock, etc.

Black garbage bag on a hot tin rook (carport) worked for me.

Any residual oils can be removed by wearing gloves, and fondling excessively while watching TV (UNLOADED!!!!!!)

When I cleaned my SKS, I poured hot water on the wood covered gas tube. Basically ruined the coating on it.

On the wood, after the heat treatment, I found those orange oil cleaners work good.

Smh.... oven cleaner and brake cleaner will absolutely destroy any wood finish. And todays paint thinner here is acetone not mineral spirits, i woudnt risk putting that stuff on my stocks

Gas works great but has terrible fumes and residual odor to deal with

All you need to do is liquify the cosmo. Heat gun and paper towels gets most of it. And then wipe it down with WD-40 ...... THE best cosmo remover.... totally benign on wood finishes

Metal trash can with lid. Place barrel down with a 100 watt incandescent bulb and cover it. Leave for a couple of days. Comes out very clean.

Wipe down excess cosmoline; hot boiling water will rinse off the rest

Barreled receiver in pvc tubing slightly larger diameter with end plug on one end and fill with mineral spirits. Excellent compatibility.
Of course, easier to get here in Utah.

Other parts mineral spirits or boil..

Stock, heat gun or plastic trash bag and wiping.
Some retention in stock?? I don't care. It's an infantry weapon.

According to Lowe’s Mineral Spirits are illegal in California. All the alternatives seemed harsh, so I got wd40

Gasoline or Diesel will work better on the metal parts and both are easily available.
Keep all chemicals away from the wood parts and just use heat.

                              ^ This

Don't get in too much of a hurry. Heat, and a little elbow grease, is all you really need.

I've done it with only heat for the metal parts too, then wiped everything down with CLP and rags/patches to get the last traces off.

For the metal, I use a small household steam cleaner that I bought for that purpose. For the wood, I just wrap it, set it in the sun and let it sweat out.
