Load one up and shoot it. That way you know what it sounds like. The instructor for a IDPA safety officer class did that just so we know the particular sound it makes.

I have had one, i caught it before pulling the trigger again. It was one of my reloads, first one in 40 years.

Yes, and yes. A friend gave me some 357's from his garage which he was never going to shoot. He knew I was a reloader but failed to mention that they had gotten wet over the years and that I shouldn't have shot them. After the squib, I came close to pulling the trigger but out of an abundance of caution (as they say), I decided to swing the cylinder open, look down the barrel and saw no light. Needless to say, I disassembled the rest.

I have had two in 26 years of reloading. As mentioned it felt very obvious. I have since purchased brass rods that are each caliber specific to remove them form the barrel in the future. I used one once and it work great. I found them on eBay.

As a competitive shooter I have had 2 myself and have caught several others and stopped them because of it.

Both of mine were so light the bullet didn't travel far enough to let the next round go into battery, so luckily I couldn't pull the trigger on it.

I have yet to witness a gun blow up from one but I try to be on the ball when I RO or am watching to call STOP

I had one once; Winchester white box 45acp.

I caught it immediately due to the sound/impulse being much less (different) than normal.

I kept the gun, G30SF aimed downrange for about 30 seconds, then dropped the mag, cleared the chamber, and disassembled slide/barrel to examine.

OP, have a range rod and mallet ready in case the bullet doesn't come out the other end on its own.

I have had two with my 38 special reloads. I did not fire a second round because the noise sounded funny. I was also paying attention for this to happen as I was trying to load the lightest load I could.
Also had a friend fire an AR-15 and it sounded funny. I yelled cease fire and he put the gun on safe and asked what's up. I told him to clear the rifle and inspect the barrel with a hanger to see if a bullet is stuck in there. Sure enough there was a bullet in there. It was military surplus ammo.

Quite a few from LAX ammo... I have always caught it... sounds nothing like a regular shot.

Had one with a 8 3/8 smith wesson 500 .. was hard to tell at first due to the large caliber but the projectile was caught between the cone and cylinder and wasn't able to advance next loaded round....

I believe the bullet jump the crimp just enough to blow off the powder between the gap and just enough to push the projectile forward .....60,000 psi is no joke ...

Had my first in 45 years of shooting not long ago. Bullet jumped the gap and lodged in the rifling but locked up the cylinder so no chance to fire another round. I have always checked things after a click and no bang but I will now check a little more thorough.

I traded some work for a shopping bag of reloads from a old customer of mine who was a avid shooter and he knew i was also. The bag was full of mixed calibers. He said he got them from a reloading buddy he shoots with.
After shooting only 20 rounds of 9mm I got a squib.
I gave back the whole bag to my customer and said just give me the cash.
