Why would a shop/FFL let you buy ammo online and ship it to their store? Seems a little disrespectful to me and a bit insulting to the shop. I'm new to all of this so maybe I'm missing something here and if so I apologize for the ignorance.

Because they charge you a fee and make money from it.

In my case because I have spent years buying and selling with my local guy and bringing him business. He doesn't stock the type and quantities I use, otherwise I would buy it from him.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

No ignorance I get your comment. Here is a story,

I went to a store a few years ago and they didn't have a gun that I wanted. The gun was on a website and I asked if they'd receive it, charge me a fee, and let me purchase it through them. They said no. I haven't done business there since.

Another store, same town, let me order the gun, pay for it and handled the paperwork and holding of the gun for me after it came in. They are still there and I still shop with them. They got a small fee for their hassle.

          1. Compared to what?
          2. At what cost?
          3. What hard evidence do you have?

The LGS rarely has ammo in sufficient quantity (I usually buy cases due to the economy of buying in bulk) for my needs or the selection that I'm looking for, so I typically buy online and have it shipped directly to me[1]. This also has the advantage of not having the ammo purchases registered to me through the state background check process, which helps preserve some of my privacy.

I'll happily buy guns, accessories, powder and primers, and self-defense ammo (which I generally buy by the box, rather than the case), etc. locally, but the rules on ammo purchases really irk me.

[1] You just need a state-issued Certificate of Eligibility and C&R FFL (PDF warning) and CA law (see part C2) allows you to have ammo shipped directly to you. Many online vendors will ship to you once you send them a copy of those documents.

If you're around the 818, 213, 323, and 626, Bullet Man 911 for bulk reloads or RTBLA for FFL transfer of your online orders.
