    Ultrasonic cleaner question....

I picked up an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner and I’m wondering what you guys use in them for gun parts? I’m thinking Simple Green would work well but wanted to get your opinions. Straight Simple Green? Diluted with water? Something else?

    Thanks in advance...

I am not sure about simple green... You have to use something that leaves no residue after it dries. There are cleaning solutions on the market specifically for cleaning brass. They are not too expensive

Be careful. I've seen threads here that mention those cleaners damaging some finishes.

I've seen people talk about simple green for gun parts. Most of the time it's for pre paint/coating prep. Check out what people do before cerakoted/duracoat/alumahyde.

Hornady sells a Sonic cleaner for reloading and gun parts. They also have a gun cleaner and brass cleaner solutions.

You will need to completely lubricate the parts after. Not only for function but to help displace water. If you have hot box, oven, some way to slightly heat the parts after cleaning that can also help get the water out. Also don't forget about the parts and let them sit in the cleaner surface rust will start to show up quickly. That said it's a great way to clean a bcg or anything else that fits and has fouling buildup.

Mine will turn nickel cases black. I use it for cleaning brass cases and bolt carriers. I wouldn't put a pistol slide into it.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

I have been using Simple Green for years and have gotten good results. I do rinse my parts in a bucket of clean water to insure they have no residue. Then I blow them dry with compressed air.

If you do go this route, make sure you out the soap and what ever your cleaning INSIDE a ziplock bag. Still cleans everything but it also keeps your sonic cleaner clean.

I've used simple green purple at 50/50 mix but name sure you rinse really well after and blow it out with compressed air after. You have to oil right after and no using it while going to sleep. You can't let it soak.

What are you trying to clean?

I use 20% simple green for cleaning some sized and trimmed rifle brass that has been tumbled in clean media for up to four hours. Before going into the solution, the primer pockets are cleaned. After soaking in the hot mixture for a while, the cleaner is run through a few cycles. Brass is then rinsed in hot water, spread out on an old baking sheet, and oven-dried (150F) for some time, to get it really dry. This brass ends up looking much like new factory brass, with the inside being every bit as good as outside. Yea, it's a lot of work, but my custom hunting ammunition has to work, and be accurate. This is one phase of several that go into our best stuff.

Hmm I've used distilled water, a little vinegar, a few drops of dishwashing soap after a few minutes the water is obviously dirty. I've seen no downside with gun parts.

I use anhydrous citric acid along with a few drops of Dawn liquid dish soap.

Didn’t someone damage their gun using vinegar?
