Why are .22LR handguns so expensive

In my quest to expand my rimfire collection. Ive been shopping for handguns in .22LR and man them some expensive hardware.
I have bought good quality 1911s and 9mm handguns for close to the prices I'm seeing for some nice .22s.
Is the saving on ammo the reason why they are so expensive?

Right now, they are economical to practice with....In an apocalyptic scenario, they will be the easy to find ammo for,

Probably costs just as much to make a .22 handgun as it does any other caliber. Why do so many plastic guns cost just as much as all steel guns?

Saving on ammo? There is target 22lr that cost more than some center fire rounds. The roster creates inflated prices. Sold all my semi auto rimfires. Next purchase will be a SW 41 hopefully an earlier model.

Paying these jacked up prices is no different than voting for tax increases and then *****ing the cost of living is too high. Can't blame the Cali roster, it's the consumer who created and perpetuates the problem by meeting a seller's absurd price.

The only great cheap one, the Ruger SR22, isn’t on the roster so it ain’t cheap. 550-600 bucks, I think it costs new what, 350? I’m no proponent of Ruger at all but the damn thing just works.

GSG 1911-22 is like $300 new. Not sure what 9mm/45/40/38super/10mm/whatevertheheckelse 1911 is out there that is actually worth buying for $300...

Hell, even Calgunners sell used Gen 3 on-roster Glocks for $570 used, and they are $470 new. Either way, can't even buy a Glock for $300.

Buy new from a "proper" LGS that actually has fair and not bloated prices. Don't buy off-roster, or else you're gonna pay that roster tax and end up with a $1000+ Glock 44.

Unfortunately, that's about $200 more than they're worth.

All things equal, a .22 rimfire is going to require that clearances are held to closer tolerances for a given small-bore pistol to be as reliable as a similar gun firing larger cartridges.
