True that! And I never said anything to contradict that...

All I am saying is that before talking about which gun is recommend for competition, shouldn't the question be - what do I need to prepare myself for competition? Obviously it's not just a few sessions with YouTube University...

At the very least - holster work (draw/reholster) and reloading...

From one of our local action pistol groups here in SoCal:

Matches require some advanced shooting skills such as; shooting while moving, using cover, multiple target engagement, drawing from concealment, rapid reloading just to mention a few. Our match is not the place to shoot your gun for the first time. It is not the place to learn how to draw from the holster either. You MUST bring those skills to the match. Do not expect us to teach you at the match.

Exactly. So many never start this sport because they're waiting to be "good enough". The reality is that if they can remember to keep the gun pointed down range, follow good trigger discipline, then that's enough to shoot your first USPSA match.

The majority of us that shoot the sport are very welcoming to new shooters. Just let the RO and your squad know its your first time and they will coach you and make sure you are safe. It will help for you to practice drawing your pistol from your holster in dry fire at home for a week or two before. Also work on reloads.

I'm a big CZ fan so my list is:

          Shadow 2
          Tactical Sport Orange

Or you could also get a stock 75 or SP-01 and drop an extra $1k over at Cajun or CZ Custom.

Go and watch. You will see what you need right away, guns, how many mags, ammo per stage, etiquette. Show up in time for the safety meeting. No better way to learn.

As a beginner (which I am) I would never show up cold to a match I've never shot. My first rimfire match I didn't even have enough mags but I had fun and just soaked it all in.

Just start with what you've got and go from there. You might want to shoot limited, production, carry optics, etc - you don't really know which one is for you until you get started. Give it a couple of matches with the gear you have, then look to upgrade. It's just like golf - it doesn't matter if you have a set of Titleists or Dunlops when you start ... but after some time in the sport you figure it out.

If you just want to shoot production, at least, the Cajun Pro Package is more like $500. That's what they recommended for me, anyway.

I shoot USPSA Production division. I run an SP-01 with the CGW Pro Package. Really sweet setup. This was the go-to Production gun before CZ released the Shadow 2. Many move to the Shadow 2.

The Shadow 2 is what I would recommend if it was on the roster. It's not. This means you'll pay min $2200 for it. You can get an SP-01 with the Pro Package for less than half that. The appreciable difference in the two is not worth that.

I personally prefer my SP-01 over the S2 but that's just because I prefer the weight balance and the grip profile of the SP-01.

Do you think they were maybe 2011's? Do people really bring 45 acp 1911s to compete against 9s? Sorry if I misunderstand theres so many classes and rules, Its hard to follow but I'm always intrigued

IDPA-heads like to shoot what they carry. Lots of people carry .45's.

Most that shoot 1911 do so chambered in 40. At least in USPSA Single Stack division. Not sure about IDPA.

USPSA Limited division is dominated by 2011. You'll see some CZ TSOs but not very many. Again, caliber of choice is 40 in limited.

Production division is dominated by CZ pistols in 9mm. Mostly Shadow 2 and SP-01.

Carry Optics division is a mixed bag. It's where you will see more plastic fantastic guns. Again, 9mm since its minor scoring like Production.

Open division is 2011 dominated. Mixed bag of 9mm major PF loads or 38 super.
