    CA Suggested Competition Gun?

Living in Central California and a Local range does completion shooting, sounds like fun but what gun do you suggest for newbies to the sport? I would love to get a P320 but too expensive to jump through hoops to get one. So looking for California versions of guns that everyone is using to get into the sport.

The choice of gun will depend on what shooting discipline you have in mind. General advice would be to get best gun you can afford so you can be sure the scores you get are on you, not on the gun, this way you can progress. Second general advice is to get a gun that agrees with you. So be prepared to acquire and sell a few until you find the one which works for you.

You mention competition shooting and then a "Shield" as a favorite. Nothing wrong with a shield ir favoring it, but that is not known as a competition gun.

There are umpteen models of Glock on roster. Take your pick. I'm not a fan but glocks are striker fired and inexpensive since you said sig is a no go.

I assume you mean some kind of pistol competition shooting.

I have shot 3 gun, IDPA, and USPSA.

One of the most common guns I see are Glock 34s.

          I gave shot a Glock 17 with a Trijicon RMR, a 1911, and a Springfield XDM.

Try a Glock 34 like saber said above.

Since you mention a pistol, we will assume some sort of pistol matches.
There are more parts available to customize a Glock or a 1911 than any other pistols.
Glocks are easier to work on and most work will not require a gunsmith.
Most work on 1911's will require a gunsmith.
Go try a Glock 17 and a 34 and see how you like the feel of each.
I have both and actually prefer the 17 as it stops on target better for me than a 34.

Barrel, sight and trigger work on most pistols and shotguns.

I use an XD Tactical with the 5" barrel so it is similar to the G34. In a free state I would like to try a Beretta 93X LTT. I also see a lot of CZ's in SA being used for Steel Challenge.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

You might want to also go out to observe one if the matches up see what other people use. Besides the gun you might also need extra magazines, mag pouches and a holster.

You can see what other rigs other people are using.

Yes, they have a fun shoot 1st Sunday and USPSA the third Sunday. I watch lots of videos in rig setups. G17 seems to be a popular choice.

Can anyone tell me the change in G17 gen 3 or gen 4?

This is for the 19, but 17's are just as similar:

Take a look to see the variety of factors to consider for the Glock Gen 3 Vs. Gen 4 debate. Contact Wing Tactical to learn more!

Completely different type of texture on the frame.
The mechanical design is very similar with just small differences that make parts incompatible.
There are a LOT more parts for Gen3 than for Gen4.
Gen3 are on roster while Gen4 are not.

Most important for me anyways is the ability to switch the magazine release to either side. Can't do it with a gen 3 without spending at least 100 bucks.

You should also check out the various CZ's being used for competition. I use a custom single action shadow for open and limited minor and all I have to do to make major in 40cal is change out the slide and barrel.
