Bad to use Hoppes 9 inside with low ventilation?

I got some Hoppes 9 and used it to clean a rifle and it smelled good at first, but after inhaling the fumes from a bowl of solvent sitting next to me while cleaning it started to get pretty harsh and my lungs felt a little warm. Is it my imagination? Should I be using more ventilation?

Edit: It sounded like I was intentionally sticking my face in the bowl and inhaling. I mean the bowl was sitting there while I was cleaning and the fumes were in the air.

Hoppes is bad to use anywhere. It’s 1960 chemical cleaner. Much better products out there. Try the MP7 products.

Love that smell, I rub it all over my chest and throw a towel over my head when I'm congested, clears it right up

I clean my guns with Hoppes 9 in a small apartment, and used to do it in an even smaller bedroom with little to no ventilation. It doesn't really affect me and I actually like the smell, but I'm certain it's no good for us, and I don't recommend it. If I had any other option I would do it in an open garage or at least a room with an open window and a fan going.

As for it being a sub-par cleaning product, I don't really know. It seems to clean my guns and barrels just fine so I haven't bothered to switch. I've tried some of the Birchwood Casey bore cleaners and those truly do smell caustic.

The sensation is similar to exposure to spray paint. You should wear a mask and gloves.

Thank you. I'm not worried about one exposure, but a lifetime of exposure is probably a bad path to.choose.

Use a small glass jar with a lid from the 99C store. Fill it close to the top for cleaning pistol barrels. Throw the barrel into the jar and close the lid to let it clean while you're cleaning the frame and slide.

Been using the same jar of Hoppes 9 for the last 16 years with an average of cleaning 3 barrels per month. Probably added about 4 ounces during that time frame.

Chicks dig the smell of Hoppe's No. 9!

Unless by “bowl” you mean bucket and your literally just sitting there sniffing the bowl you’ll be fine.
