There is a surcharge for XD transfers to discourage people from buying junk.

Would $100 in unconstitutional fees in CA put a real dent in gun buying there? If not, what would be the threshold?

The current fee has certainly slowed me down a bunch.

I predict more guns are going to be sold without DROS between friends and as long as the seller has a record of who they sold it to then it would be fairly hard to blame them for anything. But this is california where they plea bargain away gun violations to hardened criminals but won't budge an inch on an honest civilian that makes a mistake where no harm is done. along with everything else i think a hundred dollars additional fees plus licenses and taxes could come close to creating another situation like we had with prohibition back in the 1920's and 1930's. Good luck

Jeez no wonder when I went to do my first PPT last week I freaked out over how expensive the fees were... Last time I did a PPT or bought a gun was 5 years ago or so.

It would put a crimp in it for me.

As an example... California S&W M&P Shield 9mm lists for $440 at Sportsman's Warehouse.

                  Add...

                  $5/yr. for FSC
                  $100 in fees
                  $33 - $44 in sales tax

So... A firearm that lists for $400 (or less) out-of-state would run nearly $600 if you included $100 in fees?

Yeah. That would make me hesitate.

Don't forget the mandatory handgun lock fee to keep us safe from them misbehaving inside our CA DOJ approved security safes!

I think this would be the actual question... At what point do these fees/requirements become a burden on the Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms?

SCOTUS has already ruled that the Government's ability to tax is... almost... unlimited. (Obamacare?) This is where many get it 'wrong' in relating such fees as equivalent to a 'poll tax.' Bear in mind that poll taxes are now illegal in elections, not simply because SCOTUS ruled it so, but, in large measure, because the 24th Amendment was passed in 1964...

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.
Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
I suspect you hint at a more likely avenue; i.e., a disproportionate burden.

Take my earlier example of the popular Shield running nearly $600 were $100 in fees assessed. The difference in price as the result of California's fees/taxes would, almost, cover the cost of a concealed weapons permit (not counting the ammunition and course charges). Even as it is, for an individual in the lower income bracket, the financial cost of obtaining and acquiring Government 'permission' to 'carry' is nearly prohibitive already.

Take two, reasonably popular, 'low end' handguns and their approximate cost... S&W M&P Shield 9 mm ($440) and Rock Island M 1911 GI ($400 - $460).

Now, add the FSC, DROS, sales tax, ammunition (both practice and shooting requirement for CCW), and all the fees associated with the permit (IF you are even in a county which will issue one) and you are crowding $1,000 for the ability to exercise a Constitutionally protected right with a BASIC handgun... which happens to be on the roster and, therefore, actually available in California.

While many on Calguns might not see that as overly burdensome while they ask advice on which $1,600 - $3,500 Python or Dan Wesson or similar to purchase, for the average duffer, $1,000 to get your foot in the door to exercise a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT protected by the Constitution can be a little steep. That's especially true when roughly HALF that cost (maybe a little more) is tied to Government taxes, fees, and regulations on a right that "shall not be infringed."

Then again, given that the middle class has always carried a 'disproportionate burden' involved with income taxes, I'm not sure I'd hold my breath on that being a 'successful' strategy either.

After I installed it, a buddy who also has the same gun, wanted to compare them. He fired a mag of his and completely missed the target with his first shot from mine because of the difference. He followed up just fine, but was blown away by the difference. He ordered one on his phone while we were still at the range.

                          Well worth it IMHO.

Get over it. The previous DROS fee was $35 since inception. So what, it goes up $12.19. That's a the cost of a McDonalds lunch. If you want to play the game, even if its not your game, you've got to pay the price. That price is $47.19. The one getting screwed is the FFL. One could argue that they are loosing money for every DROS they do.
