A Handful or a Dozen

My problem with enthusiasm is the lack of new choices in handguns.

I have sold 3 guns so far, no regrets.
I plan on selling about 3 more along the way, just don't like them compared to similar others.

As stated above, check with your children. So far mine would like some, but not all. They like to go shooting, but not ready to own themselves.

I have 3 "nothing special" guns that I rarely shoot that have emotional or family links so those will not be sold until many years from now, maybe let the heirs dispose of them.

Roster, I have a lot if standard cap mags already.

Utah, but that's because I have rental property there and 3 of my four kids are there.


I have 3 shotguns, all 12g, one was my grandfather's and another my father's.
Only three pistol calibers .22lr and 9mm, 380acp.
Only two rifle calibers 5.56/.223 and 300blk.

Somewhat the same for me right now. All the guns I use are on the roster. The off roster firearm I own barely or don’t even get shot. I enjoy the hunt or the pain in the *** it is to get a off roster firearm. Sold a 19X I had n never shot it or loaded the mags. But even now it’s getting boring for me. The FN509 will be the last one for me. I will be sending some of the firearm I own out of state to another Property we own. so I don’t have to deal with the hassle of flying then back n fourth. Others to friends n family. Who want a firearm but money is tight n just work out a payment plan with them. Need to Figure out how to get rid of the rest.

So far the list for Legacy guns that I’ve made is.

1. Sig or Kimber 1911 for my 1st born boy

2. S&W 586 for my only girl

3. Sig 220 for the one on the way.

4. G19OD for my Step daughter. If she gets her **** together.


What do you guys think ?

I’m not pairing down in fact the opposite. I had to buy a second safe as I’m a little OCD.
I’m switching all my handguns from SA 9mm to Glock 9mm.

To make it worse I have 3 of every gun I own. My thinking is to pass them down to my 3 sons.
So 3 G19, 3 G17, 3 VP9, 3 Pc Carbines, etc.

I just like to collect and enjoy the hobby of finding new models and platforms I like.

When your prized possessions start to weigh you down, (to borrow from George Harrison), it's time to let go of the "stuff".
Typically, as we age we need stuff around us less and less. Pick your faves and keep them for now and get rid of the rest, however that might be.
You will feel a sense of freedom from that.

1. I wouldn't consider you nuts for wanting to cut back. Whether its for wanting to remove clutter or any other significant reason, sometimes it makes sense to take a hard look at what you have and decide for yourself if you want to keep that large of an amount of firearms going forward.

2. Can't say I personally know people that have gone down this road, but I do know my fair share of people who have avoided the problem entirely. I've met plenty of folks with 2-5 firearms that cover almost every base they need for their practical purposes (Ex: They own a 12 GA shotgun, an AR-15, a full size and compact 9mm for range/home defense/concealed carry, and a .22 rifle, and consider that enough to cover all their bases for practical firearms use). Granted I'll admit as a collector of mil-surp and former LE items I can admit I definitely do not fall into this category.

3. I sorta am in an in between position. I have a considerable collection of firearms, but of the bunch there's usually about a half dozen of them that regardless of the reason I'm going to the range at least one or two of them will be a constant visitor with me to the range, whether it be my CCW pistol or just a specific .22 rifle that is a joy to shoot.

4. Granted I don't have much skin in the game since I no longer live in CA, but rather most of my immediate family still does, I'll be honest and say that CA kills my enjoyment for the kinds of shooting I like to do. Run and gun types of shooting is especially hard to find, rapid fire at any kind of organized range is verboten, and essentially anything that pertains to practicing with firearms in any sort of defensive capacity beyond a well staffed CCW course seems to be looked poorly upon in the state, and to be frank I simply don't relate well to the sports shooters that stick to skeet shooters and long range rifle shooters that seem to make up a majority of professional shooters in the state.It's less of a problem since I left the state, but its still something I have to be aware of everytime I come back to visit family. It certainly doesn't help the damning trifecta of the various state AWB's, magazine bans, and the handgun roster had essentially throttled my interest in almost any firearm made later than the 1950's when I used to live there, which severely limits my options as well if I ever move back.

5. I actually had a conversation with my dad about this, who lives in CA still, and it was a damning split between repealing the various AWB's or the handgun roster. I'll admit to being a rifle guy, so to me I'd gladly put up with the situation involving the PPT and consignment waits to get a modern handgun if it means trashing every grip fin, stock locking pin, and muzzle brake my father's had to put on his various rifles, whereas my dads a handgun shooter, and he'd be fine with the reverse, where he'd be fine with fixed stocks, grip fins,and muzzle brakes if it meant he could walk into the store and ask for a 2020 model of handgun that day.

6. Thankfully I don't have to move. Arizona is frankly almost gun law perfection (though I will admit I wouldn't mind if they added a practical shooting portion to their concealed carry process).

I've been down this road and I sold a dozen guns before I escaped California to Florida. I evaluated my collection and sold off what I was no longer interested in or wasn't going to shoot.

Since acquiring my freedom I've bought a Sig P365 and CZ TSO, have a deposit on 2020 Python and will buy a DW DWX when they are available.

There is no artificial rush caused by tyrannical government policies, so I'm waiting to buy exactly what I want.

Small Update... So since my initial post. I have Unloaded couple of firearms and I say it’s like a Small burden has been lifted. It’s been almost fun helping people get the firearms they were looking for and helping them learn about the shooting sports. I would still like to be under the number I have now but I will get there.

That's kind of where I'm at. I haven't sold any guns but I have a 4" stainless GP100 on lay-a-way that I will DROS tomorrow. I bought it to replace the one I gave my daughter. I didn't think I'd miss it so much when I gave it to her. Eventually I will replace the blued 4" S&W Model 25-5 that I also gave her. I've been looking at the blued 6 1/2" Model 25 from the S&W classic line even though they're a bit pricey.
My daughter and two sons will inherit my guns some day so I won't be giving them any more right now.
