The license number in question is issued to a legit gun shop, Triple J Guns, Inc., in Smithville, MO. I'm fully convinced this wasn't a scam after all.
Except for a couple of little details:

Except for a couple of little details:
- The gun store was opened in 2015 by Joseph R. Messina of Kansas City, MO, as helpfully documented by Missouri Secretary of State.
- As far as I can tell, Joseph Messina goes by Joe, not Gary. See, e.g., the Smithville Chamber of Commerce November 2015 newsletter at https://www.smithvillechamber.org/fi...46032916PM.pdf (page 3).
- Joe and Triple J Guns also consistently use the email address triplejguns@aol.com on their site, their Facebook page, and many other places.
- And the license is actually -8K-, not -1K-, as can be easily verified by downloading the Missouri licensee list through the ATF website.
Hmm...
