Look at the sp5 thread where they talk about putting a fake silencer on it that makes it 16" long, pin and weld, put a stock on it, and buy it as a long gun. Audiophil can probably do it for you.

            Hi OP,

I currently own an HK SP5k and live in California as well. To answer your question:

            1) In order to purchase the HK SP5K in CA, you'd have to do a private party transfer (PPT) from someone who already owns the pistol in CA, or, you have to be a LEO (exempt from CA handgun roster).

            2) The HK SP5K's magazine has to be fixed to the pistol, otherwise, it would be considered an assault pistol in CA. Braces are fine per ATF.

            Hope this helps,

            Ninja 0ut

Then it seems that you don't want to get an Sp5K after all because that's how it's done in CA.
Another option is to move out of CA.

You could get one with a fixed mag and just put it away for collecting because reloading through the ejection port sucks. It's a waste of time and not worth it unless you are a die hard collector. If you're buying to shoot your best bet is to just buy an MP5 carbine with a grip fin on it. I sold my HK clone pistols because I didn't want to deal with the reloading issues.
