    New Shooter Question

    So.
I took my friend's kids to the range today, minors 14 and 16.
I had them fire guns owned by me.
The 14 year old did great, but 16 year old was all over the target and possibly none on target with a long guns at 15 yards.
I tried to figure out the problem, and found out he is right hand dominant and left eye dominant. So I tried having him to keep both his eyes open, but still unable to get a sight in.

Is there a remedy to his issue?

Pistol: shoot with your strong hand, aim with your dominant eye even if you're cross-dominant. In kid's case, shoot with right hand, aim with left eye.

Rifle: shoot with the hand where your dominant eye is. Way easier to learn how to shoot with the weak hand than to change eye dominance. In kid's case, teach him to shoot with left hand off of the left shoulder.

Whether to shoot with both eyes open or not is a much more nuanced question that will have to be answered way later.

Yea I tried having him shoot left handed, and it was worse than right for long gun. He gave up and decided to shoot the handgun, which he did great on, but I could see that he really wanted to shoot well with long guns.

I am right hand/left eye dominant and i shoot rifles left handed. I can't even wink my left eye for shooting a rifle right handed. I actually did try an eyepatch once LOL. As a kid, i couldn't hit anything with a BB gun until i figured that out and it all became easy after that.
Pistols don't seem to be an issue for me, but archery is another I have to do left handed.
          It works for me.

If he's having an issue shooting the rifle left handed, then try right handed, but close the dominant left eye while lining up the sights.

I had him close his left dominant eye as he fired from right, he said he couldn't line up the rear sight with the front aperture.
I have tried all that is suggested. I think I will just have him stick to handguns until he can find comfort in shooting left handed possibly.

I lost sight in right eye, and had to relearn, but being ambidextrious, i had to learn shooting left eye side. It's MORE relaxing.

                          He was wearing prescription glasses.
You do know what it means to have dominant eye?

I'm right-handed and 'left-eyed' and this is what I've done all my life.

this is me. i remember when i first started shooting ar, the rifle is on my right by using my left eye to sight. needless to say it was very uncomfortable.

cannot remember if i asked a question here or read a thread about cross eye dominanance. the suggestion was to put the rifle on the left where the dominant eye is and learn to shoot it that way.

now, i don't even have to think about it.

op, it is easier to hit the target with one eye open especially for beginners. they can focus more and have a better sight on the target.
