This is a website about the confiscation of peoples firearms during Katrina.

It amazes me that this really happened...

All the links on the left start a video. This one pisses me off the most...

Take a look at H.R. 5013, "The Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006", signed into law by President Bush. It specifically addresses this type of situation.

        Dont Tread on Me

I don't think this link can be posted too many times.

The real shame is that I bet most gun owners were pro law enforcement. It now appears that some law enforcement officers have forgotten that they are employed by the law abiding to protect us.

Any time .gov labors under the misapprehension that it grants us rights, it also feels justified in taking them away

From the web site referenced above:

"Thousands of firearms were then confiscated from law-abiding gun owners. The police gave no paperwork or receipts for those guns. They just stormed in and seized them."

I'd really like to learn the details of how these citizens were approached and the details about how their firearms were 'confiscated?' For sure every situation is different and subject to special circumstances and everyone's thought process and emotions subject to 'the moment.' I wonder how many of these confiscated items are now in the collections of their 'acquirors?'

I just have a really hard time reconciling how someone justs hand their things over - especially without clear undertstanding of why, receipt, etc. The 'confiscators' must have had some really persuasive demeanor and back-up. I can't say how I'd react or what I'd do; And I won't say I'd put up a fight. But then again I see how I might could.

These unfortunate people affected by the Hurricanes had to have been on the extreme edge and if I were on a jury, I'd give a lot of leeway for anyone being charged with defending themselves in their homes. Now if they were wandering around with their firearms that would be a different story.

I guess the saying goes, "If they come for my guns, they're going to leave with my bullets", does make you think about what you'd do in a disaster.

Bottomline, the police and national guard had enough time to run around to neighborhoods that for all intense purpose we NOT underwater and people could defend themselves, but didn't do crap about the looting, and were actually looting themselves... Sorry but this crap is completely un-American...

Did you check out the videos? The one of the cops piling onto that old lady holding the unloaded revolver? When you're surrounded by missing link-looking guys with guns maybe drawn, you're probably not going to go bitching about your receipt.

I don't appreciate the intent of your response but to clarify, my question about getting a 'receipt' was subordinate to my interest in how these people were approached. I didn't check out the videos since I'm not interested in single instances but rather the general trend/big picture. To be sure, I'm not questioning or faulting an older lady with an empty handgun. I'm more interested in why and under what reasoning someone who might have 'seen them coming' would forfeit their likely best means of protection? Just hand it over?

An air assault and SWAT storm would be one thing. Some public employee/"servants" telling me to give up my guns would be way different.

What guns? They were stolen by looters, if you head that way, you might be able to catch them.

The big picture was that most people had their firearms taken away at gunpoint by out of state police officers and national guard soldiers. They were told to give them up or else. New orleans mayor Ray Nagin and the New orleans police chief "decided" that the only people that would be armed would be Law enforcement (and the criminals who don't give a rat's behind about the law) and then they proceeded to disarm the public at gunpoint or with strongarm tactics. It wasn't your friendly neighborhood civil servant going door to door politely asking for your guns
In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.

                              and this was Louisiana!

and this was Louisiana! They have some of the least restrictive firearms laws in the country. Imagine what would have happened in Los Angeles or San Francisco?!
