that is rough. What is going to be rougher is her or someone else even attempting to sell off by piece. Dam near full time job if dealing with a 100 or even a dozen.

Buy what you like from her giving her a decent price. Then help her find a large buyer..its going to discount so get ready. If she has not desperate to squeeze every dollar then just dump those things. FFL's got's to eat and pay bills as well

Isn't it 6 sales / transfers per year?

          Currently...

It is less than six handgun transactions per calendar year.

A single transaction can include any amount of handguns.

          Starting next year...

It is less than six firearm transactions per calendar year with the total amount of firearms transferred being 50.

A single transaction can include any amount of firearms.

Might be California law. Not Federal.

Selling guns is hardly going to be a "full time job". Just take some pictures, google the make and model a little, and fill out the gunbroker form and post the pics. When it sells ship it off to the buyer's ffl. If it doesn't sell, the auction stays in place, you just have to renew it.

That sucks. The worst for me is to imagine some POS conning a gun away from a friend's wife and bragging to his POS friends about he got it for such a deal. Makes you appreciate the viking approach. I agree with others though- make sure at least a few nice pieces stick around for his kids.

                  I'm sorry for your loss.

We don't have enough friends as it is. Makes losing the good ones even harder.

                    Just an update

My wife and I visited with them last night. The widow has no intention of mass selling the guns, at least not in the foreseeable future. Her priority is to get them in the clear legally and then discuss with the daughter (she's 17). Both of them recognize that many of those pieces pre-date both of them coming in to Jim's life and I think they respect that and wish to preserve his legacy and only hobby.

I gave her an attorney's number I got through CGN and told her to bring up AWs when they chat. I also advised her to get an FSC (I'm just wildly guessing it may be required to legally inherit the handguns).

I'm feeling easy now about the fate of Jim's guns.

Consignment to a gun store may be a good middle of the road approach if you agree to fair prices and fair percentage the store takes.

Auction house can be very risky and disappointing. Unless you get reserves and they generally won't do that except on higher end guns.

Most money of course will be selling them here but that would be a huge amount of time and flakery. Worst is selling them outright to a gun shop.

FWIW, I believe it would be valuable for your friends wife, for you to visit and make a list for her of the estates firearms and call out any special circumstances (e.g. AWs, C&R, really valuables, old duty guns carried by decedent etc.). You can also give an estimation of value (50% if you sold them to a FFL, 75% if you consign them etc.)

Very true. People tend to forget a FFL is generally doing for a living what they are doing as a hobby. They can not pay full retail for guns.

You are paying for the convenience when selling guns off to a FFL. Expect roughtly about half of Blue Book.

I've done it from both sides of the counter. I've seen people get very upset when I've made fair offers on their guns. They paid top dollar and they expect you to as well. Also emotionally attached to their guns.

That's absurd. On gunbroker someone will pay what it's worth. Maybe more.

It’s not practical to list and sell a large collection on calguns.

I tried selling portions of a 100 gun collection and quickly realized that it’s overwhelming.

I managed two separate sales, one was 100ish guns and the other was 85ish guns. Just researching the values is time consuming let alone photos, descriptions, and answering questions!

I suggest taking them to a local ffl and making a deal on the commission.
