Neither. I use M-pro 7 to clean and Froglube to lube.
If I had to choose, I would use CLP even though it dries out quickly, because the smell of Ballistol makes me want to vomit.

LOL. At least vegetable oil doesn't turn your gun into as much of a gummed up mess as coconut oil. It still will, just not as quick.

I use a variety. Rem oil is too thin for lubrication but good for a wipe down, CLP (mil-spec) kinda stinks and is all purpose, but like most all purpose things, tends to be mediocre for multiple uses. For lubrication I like Mobil 1, it's got a nice consistency and sticks to surfaces well and will never break down. Any kind of regular gun oil for surface wipe downs and light cleaning. Even WD40 is good for wet/sweaty guns as long as you don't use it for lubrication. It displaces water (WD) and has good anti corrosion properties.

I don't have Ballistol, but it seems to be the go to for antique wood and steel. But leftover Mobil 1 covers 90% of my basic lubrication needs.

In short, it's like asking what gun is best. They have different uses and pros/cons.

i use clp for basic cleaning

for bore cleaning i still use hoppes 9, and hoppes copper solvent if needed.

i'll run a patch of clp before the last dry patch.

                i don't use clp as a lubricant.
i use Penn reel lube and lucas gun grease or marine grease (probably the same thing at a fraction of the price).

Lol. I am thinking of an early retirement to get into the invention of the latest and greatest gun lube.

CLP is light years ahead of Ballistol for lubrication. It isn't even close.

I replaced my BALLISTOL with G96, I dont like the smell of Ballistol in the house

almost smells like dirty socks and has an "unpleasant ordor" that lingers

I prefer something a little thicker like LUCAS EXTREME DUTY

Ballistol is good for shotguns & surplus rifles plus it's good for wiping on the wood.

Slip 2k here. I don't like cancerous petroleum products. No smell = non-toxic. The copper cleaner works great. The bore cleaner works great. The EWL and 30 wt. works great.

Rem oil in the spray can is used for door locks and stuff.

Even Froglube works great, on my garage door rails.

use BALLISTOL for that sentimental high school locker room odor in your house
