    Lytle Creek: In financial trouble?

Wanted to take some shots at 200 yards, so we went to Lytle Creek. I'm not a huge fan, but it's usually the least crowded longer-than-100-yards range I have access to.

The range-master repeatedly asked us to "tell our friends" about the range, as they "were going to have trouble staying open".

    As he said that:
    1. We were getting eaten alive by mosquitos
    2. we were all getting really tired from hammering our targets into the hard ground
    3. I swear the range spends more time "cold" with people downrange than "hot" with people shooting...

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

Not to mention their aggressive refusal to let grandfathered, legal magazines be used.

Heres a news flash, i dont even own any AR mags that are not 30 rounders.

Were you there on a week day or weekend?

I haven’t been in a couple years but last time I was there on a weekend it was pretty crowded. Weekdays not so much.

If I didn’t have a membership at West End i’d go there more often.

Try joining their VIP club, they will send a laborer down range to hammer your target into the hard ground and if you tip them enough they will keep a constant cloud of Deet around your shaded bench, maybe even fan you if it's over 80*.

Isn't that a private range? I'm gonna look it up next time I'm shooting 100 yards. How much? Website?

              lytle creek isn't private.

but they lost a lot of calgunner business when they banned +10 rd magazines. and RAW weapons due to allowing federal forest rangers to patrol the range and inspect customer guns and these forest rangers are dimwits when it comes to CA gun laws.

I haven't been there in over 15 years, but I remember them being rude back then also.

I just checked Yelp's reviews and there are many people who complain about GENE. Well, if you're going to be a dick to your customers then you can expect to lose your customer base. They shouldn't come crying now about lack of business.

I don't like seeing gun stores and ranges close down, but I also don't feel much sympathy for crotchy ol' buzzards also.

Anyhow, since they lease the property from the forest service is it the ranges choice not to allow standard capacity mags or is it a forest service decision? Since they are leasing I don’t think they can keep the FS out, maybe I’m wrong.
But the forest service is a fed agency, right. So they abide by fed restrictions, so since 10+ mags are not restricted at federal level, it should be a non-issue. Maybe the range is being over-protective.

Lytle Creek is one of a very few ranges that lets your shoot bi-metal all year long. It's a big saving for AK47 shooters

Have not been there in a couple months, but never had any issues with the personal there. "Gene" the old man is quite polite to be honest, he would come up to us and tell us random stories or give us a chuckle with some of his jokes. I am a fairly young as well. Yes I have seen some fellows who could not follow simple guidelines that would have to be talked to, but only for the reason of keeping everyone else safe. Yes the roads are a bit worn down, but those are the benefits of being outdoors. I try not to base a place off yelp review, most of those who do write poor reviews feel entitled to something, better going in and experience it in person.

Not to mention all the Mosin Nagant shooters, and anyone who shoots mil surp ammo. (Malaysian surplus .308 - it's steel core....)

The thing is there are very few public outdoor ranges in So. Cal. anymore. I may not go there much anymore but I appreciate them being there in case I do.

I personally never had any issues there. Yes, it's annoying when they check on your banana magazines to make sure they're 10rnd, so just make sure you bring 10 round mags and don't take it personally. Last time I shot there I had a good conversation with the old dude...
