Yes you must register. Youfirst get serial number from state then complete it and engrave it. Then register it. No polymer 80%. Single shot first. There are a hundred posts on this at least.

Before you start the build, you must apply for marking information from CA DOJ. This process will register the firearm.

Within 10 days of receiving the CA DOJ marking info, you must engrave the firearm and submit proof to CA DOJ.

Once you receive the CA DOJ marking info, you have 30 days to modify the firearm and you must update the firearm's final configuration with CA DOJ.

After it is made, it is CA illegal to transfer ownership of it.
^Only exemption to this is to surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

A non-exempt unmarked/non-registered self-made firearm is subject to confiscation as evidence of violating CA self-made firearm laws.

80% lowers are done in this state. Just go and buy finished lower and be happy.
Going through process of what the state wants you to do would piss me off.

On the other hand, what would be a good reason to build an 80%?

Get a finished lower, they're so cheap right now - just buy. You'll pay a lot more to go 80% and your first few probably won't look nice.

            California ar15 question

If you make a 80 percent ar15 and make it featureless is it legal in California. Would I still need to engrave them?

Let us know how a firearm without a serial number works for you.
              Keep it simple!

Not anymore. Better off spending $50 and getting a finished receiver.

                  Welcome new person.

You should research your topic just a little before annoying people but I'll help you.

You can, however, first you need to submit an application with California DOJ for a serial number. If approved they'll issue you a serial number and you'll need to have that number, and the other required information laser etched onto the receiver.

Trophy shop tools won't scratch the forged receiver so don't waste your time with them. You'll need to find a company that does laser etching. It cost me $40 when I did mine a couple years ago, however, they have since closed or moved out of my city.

                  Good luck!

You must get a serial number and engrave it on firearm.

                      That's not nice.

He should buy the 80%, buy the jig, fill out and pay for the application, wait 6-9 months to get a letter from DOJ, spend one weekend completing it, spend $40-$60 on laser etching, and feel the satisfaction of having accomplished it himself!

Getting the application is registering right. This is just a serial number they attach to your gun electronically. I am sorry if I a annoying you. I did some research in this search and did not find exactly what I needed. I probably missed it. They just make it so hard here in California and I am just going through all the steps of getting all the information I can.

                            Always happy to help!

No, getting the letter does not mean registered, It just means that they issued you a serial number. You would still need provide the documentation and information that would be noted in the letter.

As someone said above, it's not worth it anymore.

The only 80% that I would consider worthwhile would be an aluminum frame 1911, and that's mainly because there aren't any affordable light weight 1911's on the roster. If you do this prepare to spend HOURS milling, and fitting parts and I'll say that most people don't have the patience.

A hoe built 1911 was more cool when you could choose your own serial number but I guess it's still cool because it's actually a very challenging and rewarding project.

                            Good luck,
