Portuguese used AR 10's in Africa (the rifles rejected by the stupid US military) and loved them. some had 20K rounds thru them. they said they were the most reliable battle rifles in existence. old guys that don't walk much any where anyway want light full power battle rifles. Bad combo

AR15 for 5.56. Low recoil and light rifle.

For .308, I like my M1A 18”. It has the extra weight/heft to help tame the recoil. Very easy on the shoulder. Plus the wood stock is beautiful and makes it featureless straight out of the box.

it sounds like you have no restrictions on the number of guns, so i would go with the smaller caliber for your AR platform and a larger caliber bolt gun for long range shooting.

there are some options for a multi-purpose platform when you need both semi-auto firepower and the ability to consistently hit targets beyond 600-800 yds.

for these you again have to choose between the widely popular and readily available .308 win/7.62x51 nato, or newer 6.5 CM, which is unarguably more accurate beyond 600yds in windy conditions, but might be harder to find in a SHTF situation if you needed to scavage ammo.

it sounds like you are lucky and can have an assortment to choose from.
for me it was a lot harder as i had to choose one platform for everything, and wanted proven reliability to go with it.

I have my AR-308 for similar reasons to what you anticipate: A potential SHTF scenario where I need to reach out further than my AR-15. Still, I suspect I'd make much more use of my AR-15 in that event. The ability to carry more ammo on my person would be a strong argument for reaching for the .223 over the .308.

If you want an accurate long range rifle in some caliber that starts with 3, you can't beat a bolt action rifle. I look at the AR-308 as a more specialized gun, and I own one largely because I am fascinated by the idea and process of being able to build your own rifle.

Bottom line for me is that if I had neither I'd definitely buy the AR-15 first. Whether the bolt action or AR-308 comes next is a tougher call.

yeah, i agree. my plan is to get a bolt action in .308 or .338 lapua, but that will have to wait since the scope is going to cost $$$ to see out to 1200+ yards.

so i dropped the hammer on the Stag 15L 3GE in 5.56.
now i have to figure out what scope i should go with for that. not sure weather to go holographic or traditional. i need some help and recommendations for good affordable glass.
also, any recommendations for good inexpensive range-ammo?
