I'd get several of the smaller platforms before bothering with a 308 AR. Especially if it's your first.

But definitely get them both eventually, and sooner is better than later!

I built 4 Ar15's before I took on an AR10, not really a big deal if you do your research and know what you want in the end.

Mine is built on a Mega billet set, this is the only video I have. My son's friend taking his first shot, your .223/.556 will not sound like this

But get the 5.56 first... ammos are cheaper, so you can save up faster to get the .308 too.

Get or build both!! My AR10 doesn't get much range time as the AR15 but it's a blast to shoot long range.

OP. If you haven’t shot a .308 before give it a try before making your decision. I know guys who really wanted a rifle in .308 rifle until shooting one and they decided .223 fit them better.

I don’t have an AR platform .308 but I do have a PTR in .308, as well as bolt guns in that caliber. I also have several .556 ARs (including a lefty I’ll eventually build for my son). I shoot the .556 guns WAY more often than the .308’s. Cheaper ammo. Less recoils, etc. Consider also what distance you plan on doing your shooting. I regularly shoot at 300 yards, but most people never shoot farther than 100 yards or even 25 because they only do indoor. .556 is fine for up to 300 yards. If you want more punch get a .300 bo upper as well as s .556 They’re inexpensive.

As far as lefty - if you don’t ever plan to sell it get the lefty and forget about resale value.

Just realize most .308 ARs are going to be heavier so it mainly will be a bi pod shooter but dont let that detour you from getting one. It's good to have variety and while a sling will aid with deployment of the .308 nothing compares to a .223/5.56 AR. I'd buy an off the shelf .308 as most have said it's not a standard set up like all AR15s. Get both, you wont be disappointed. I bought the M&P10 (Hindsight being I should have bought a different one as S&W are proprietary as well) but it negates some of the performance issues. Slap a good 4x14 ish scope on it and reach out to 600yds.

5.56/223. Cheaper to shoot and the ar15 is fun to customize. Ar10 is cool but the ammo is expensive and has way more recoil which you will feel. I had both but I had scars. I got rid of the scar 17 before the 16 and chose a 6 5 creedmoor bolt action rifle for long range precision

what adds to the recoil of the 308 is everybody wants a 6.5 lb 308 AR with a short skinny barrel. not a good combination. there are very good muzzle brakes where on u tube I watched a guy fire a full auto AR 308 and it hardly moved. it was not a giant heavy rifle.

Most people will shoot a 5.56 a lot more than a .308 due to ammo cost alone. Personally, myself I prefer an M1A or FAL for a 308 platform as the extra weight helps tame recoil.

interestingly, i'm having to buy a whole new "modern" new gun collection.
i moved to Mexico and couldn't take NATO rounds to i sold everything but my M1 garand/carbine collection (12 guns) but i got those mostly for collecting purposes. i have one that is to shoot.

I sold pretty much everything collectible also.
Mostly looking at what ammo is cheap and around is kinda the key to what I kinda want to shoot. But I would like to shoot some accurate ammo also that is more expensive.

Most common is best even if you don't shoot much or at all at least you won't have to drive super far to buy it.

I would definitely go ar15 that way you can still shoot 22lr in it.
Also 308 to.
I guess one of each. One AR10 and one AR15 is all you really need.
Commercial xm193 and m80 is everywhere.

The kivaari looks like a awesome gun though that **** is expensive to shoot.
