Fyi, I managed to use my 03 to aquire a 1964 blued 4" Python that's in great condition. I dont show/shoot it often, its just in the safe. The seller was also extremely helpful.

Offer to sell it to him at a profit for yourself. If you don't, we will likely just turn around and re-sell it again so he can make a profit.

I’m gonna say that the guy deserves a chance at getting back what he shouldn’t have sold to begin with - that being said, you have no reason not to profit from his short-sightedness. First, I’d suggest he try to find you something similar (out of state people seem to have more access to nice things). If no luck, let him simmer for a while but make him an offer that still gives you more room to find a replacement yourself.
