A regular tube with an 11.5 inch barrel should be 26".

I’m at 26.50 inches but worried about the legality of the having a vfg on a pistol build it’s for a clone build. These laws are always changing.

The easiest way to look at the "<" and ">" operators is that the relation is true if the quantity at the "small" end of the operator is less than the quantity at the "large" end of the operator.

In CA, a barrel under 16" makes it a pistol.
If it is semi-auto pistol (barrel under 16" long) and has a detachable magazine outside of the pistol grip, it's an assault weapon.
Fixing the magazine into the receiver gets rid of the "detatchable magazine outside of the pistol grip".

Title1 "other" needs to have a 16"+ barrel and can have a pistol grip.
Having a stock on a title 1 other makes it a rifle and therefore subject to assault weapon laws which would then require the magazine to be locked or have no features in order for it to NOT be an assault weapon.
A pistol grip is a feature on a rifle.

Just efile a form 1. That's what I did with my daniel defense Milspec + mk18. Went from pistol to SBR in 10 working days. And yes I used my California real ID/license when I filed. Lol

I ended up getting my free state real license during my waiting period and had to edit and it was still approved.

CA laws have changed since the creation of this thread...

                    Under Federal laws/regulations...

When measuring the overall length of a Title 1 Handgun, Title 1 Other, or Title 2 AOW; the firearm is measured in the shortest possible firing configuration (arm stablizing brace removed or, if permanently attached, folded/collapsed) and non-permenently attached muzzle device removed.

If the overall length is less than 26" with the non-permanently attached muzzle device removed and arm stablizing brace removed or, if permanently attached, folded/collapsed, then it can not legally have a forward vertical grip attached to it without BATFE approval to make a Title 2 AOW.

                    Under CA laws...

A firearm with a less than 16" barrel is a handgun.
^A handgun can also be classified as a SBR/SBS, if it meets also those definitions.

A firearm with a 16" or greater length barrel is a long gun.

A firearm with a rifled barrel and designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder is a rifle.
^A rifle with a less than 16" barrel length or a less than 26" overall length is a SBR.

A firearm with non-rifled barrel that has a less than 18" barrel length or less than 26" overall length is an unconventional pistol.

                    Therefore...

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a less than 16" rifled barrel length and does not have a fixed magazine, then it's an illegal assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(4)(D)]

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a less than 16" rifled barrel length and has a fixed 10 or less round magazine, then it is not considered an assault weapon.
^But, if that firearm is redesigned to be fired from the shoulder, then it can be considered a SBR. [PC 17170(a)]

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a greater than 16" rifled barrel length and does not have a fixed magazine and is designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder, then it is an illegal assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(1)(A)]

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a 16" or greater rifled barrel length and does not have a fixed magazine and is not designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder, then it is an illegal assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(9)(J)]

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a 16" or greater rifled barrel length and has a fixed 10 or less round magazine and has an overall length of less than 30" and is not designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder, then it is an illegal assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(11)]

If the semi-auto "AR pistol" has a 16" or greater rifled barrel length and has a fixed 10 or less round magazine and has an overall length of 30" or greater and is not designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder, then it is not considered an assault weapon.

What about a California registered AW uzi pistol?
Is it ok to put on the forward horizontal grip and be CA legal? The Feds only care about vertical grips.

A registered AW can have AS MANY of the AW FEATURES as you want.
