    What kind of ammo?...

So all the ammo I have stockpiled is FMJ, range type stuff. Think Blazer, American Eagle, Federal, Sellier & Bellot, etc.

I dont really have any hollow points or defensive ammo. Reason being its typically twice as much if not more than the other stuff.

    I got thousands of 115gr 9mm and 55gr .223/5.56.

So my question is this, in a defensive or SHTF situation, would the range friendly ammo be sufficient for self defense? Or should i start stockpiling hollow points and green tip?

What do you guys primarily have stocked up?

Your range ammo will work just fine should you ever be unfortunate enough to have to defend yourself or others. I buy ammo and components that I use and for no other reason than that.

The range ammo will work fine. I bought a case of the same ammunition that my Sheriff's Department uses for my home and carry guns just because it's one less thing to have to defend in a self defense case.

Did you know that your range 5.56 ammo (M193) is very lethal? The plate inserts for chest rigs that are rated for M855 is not rated M193 due to the high MV of M193. Check it out. There's a video on youtube from a plate manufacturer explaining the difference.

If you're talking about pure shtf/stockpile-- then stocking up on ball ammo is fine given the price difference.

As someone mentioned above, M193 5.56 is a pretty lethal round. As far as handgun ammo, I have maybe 500 rds of 9mm JHP's and 500 rds of .45 JHP.

All my JHP's are Speer Gold Dot. I use them for my Home Defense guns and bought a lot so I can continue to make sure they cycle through my guns.

But as far as buying thousands of rounds of 9mm or .45 to have for a rainy day, or a zombie apocalypse, I'd just stick with buying as much ball ammo as possible from reputable manufacturers.

Shot placement is #1 reason fights are stopped with a handgun

              It’s not gear
It’s not about the hole size 9,10 or 11 mm

It’s about the musician hitting the note / cord

For Ammo, the Winchester Ranger T series is good. It feeds well and expands well

Speer Gold Dot does the same
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
              (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

In addition at >2500 fps in velocity XM193 performs almost ideally in testing, reliably fragmenting and penetrating to lethal depth. I stock it and use it in my defensive carbine for this reason. No need for anything with a dancing hologram box.

Yes and no. Handguns are poor manstoppers. I've seen people shot in the heart and still have up to a minute of fight left in them until they lose enough blood to pass out or quit. Anything to help increase the surface area of the wound is welcome so I'll always use something expansive in my pistols.

Good ammo listed though. I'll also add Winchester white box HP ammo is almost as cheap as brass cased FMJ, it's worked well in my Glock 23 so far and it's cheap enough I can use it at the range.

My opinion is that at the typical home defense distances and the kind of bad guys you're trying to stop, those ammo will work really nicely. Those are the same type of ammo I have for home defense too.

I prefer a 12 guage shotgun for home defense myself, that's because both wife and I shoot trap frequently (both in day time and also at night) and we're very used to shotguns. The AR and pistols are good standbys but the shotgun is what I'm grabbing first.

HP's yes...... Green Tip....5.56mm ...One of the ranges I shoot at, does not not allow Green Tip 5.56mm.....it's great ammo but check with your favorite range ti see if is allow.

This is what i've purchased. I purchased different weights and ensured all cycle reliably.
