    Browning Buckmark Cleaning

The manual for the Browning Buckmark (at least the model I have) specifically says NOT to field strip the gun for cleaning. Instead all one is supposed to do is run a bore brush through the barrel, clean the chamber, and apply oil in all the usual places.

Is that really sufficient? I'm leaning towards a yes since that's what the manual says...

No. I take mine apart every time I shoot them. They need it.

I don’t think you need to everytime, I’ve had mine for only a short while. I’ve fired 650 rounds so far and have cleaned it twice, the way Browning says too. But at some point north of 1000 rounds fired I will disassembled completely and do a thorough cleaning. It’s easy to do, I’ve already disassembled it once when I added a rail for an optic.

I'm at 2700 rounds & I've never disassembled it for cleaning. I will at some point, but after every session I just clean the feed ramps, bore, and bolt face.

some buckmarks use a torx bit and some use a 7/64 allen to remove the barrel. Browning uses a copper colored Loctite which can be troublesome the first time

Isn't there a little tab at the recoil spring that shoots across the room unexpectedly when the gun is taken apart?

Disassembly is my major dislike about a Buckmark.
This and necessity, limit my take down to 1k+ rounds.
Another thing to remember is that the plastic buffer on the recoil spring can break up and may need to be replaced. Mine did after 15 yrs.

Two things I hated about the Buck Mark: the screws coming loose during shooting, and the disassembly. I got rid of it for those two reasons. Otherwise it's a great gun.

Even when everything goes right it's still a PITA to take down, and no matter what the manual says you will eventually need to take it down (especially after shooting dirty 22) to get rid of the gunk in some hard-to-reach places.

Some teflon tape on the top front screw will keep it from coming loose during shooting.

I have two of them, I just spent Friday cleaning many of my guns, including both of the buckmarks. Yeah, not the easiest gun to break down, but it really wasn’t a big deal. It’s worth a few extra minutes to do it right. I do a full strip cleaning about every other time I take them out, depending on the round count.

Shot thousands of rounds thru my buckmark and has never disassembled it. Use hoppes and boresnake for the barrel, the rest of the gun is sprayed with a generous dose of WD-40. Then using compressed air and rag, get rid of all the wd-40 and put oil on the rails with the slide locked open. Done.

1 major irritant with the take down is that the screw head on the top rear (mine has a slotted screw) will eventually get buggered up. I hate buggered screws.

Be careful that you don't bend the Recoil Spring Guide when removing or reassembling.
