What is " Like New" when buying a gun?

In my hunt for an 1895sbl, i have had several private and dealer advertise a " "Like new" gun only to find out through pictures they are gouged up. Also advertised as only 10 or 20 rounds thru. In my search i realize no one's word means anything. Truly sad people are so dishonest.
I will only buy new guns from now on unless i can inspect in person. i am just lucky i didnt make a mistake buying any of those "Like new" guns.

    If the seller is honest...

Like new means no scratches, bumps etc. Clean and unmolested. A new looking gun.

Used guns are like used cars. Don't trust and verify. Keep looking and you will find it.

Its hard to say. For me " Like new" means exactly that, unfired, with box and paperwork and possible safe scratch.
" NEW, or NIB " means exactly that, no safe marks, still in box and not taken out.

A lot of guys purchase weapons, then they sit in a safe for years, then sell and they are basically new but there might be handling marks and in the end Ive gotten brand new guns from the factory that had little scuffs and scratches...
      ESPECIALLY marlin and Remington.

"LNIB" on CGN means it's only been fondled and caressed with care...

and only has between one mag to 100 rds fired through it

For me, NIB means it's never been loaded or shot. Revolver should not have a turn ring. No dents, scratches, dings.

Like new is as above but fired. Still no scratches or gouges.

Like new doesnt just mean "not old", it means not screwed up. I have stuff from the 1980s that is like new.

Some things are prooveably true: 2 owners, 100 rounds fired, etc.

Others are simply "terms of art"... Like new, shoots well, great gun, etc.

In the car world, the two are different, and there are a lot of laws and contract terms to indicate what is enforceable and what is not.

In the gun world, it's best to ignore everything the seller says.

I've written up my ongoing adventures as I learn to hunt.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

I am currently on the hunt for a glock 35 and the garbage I have seen listed as "like new" is no way in any way "like new".

first and foremost there seems to be a couple of categories of "only 50 rounds". The last one I looked at was only 50 rounds and like new, yet it had scratches all over it and the rifling in the barrel was barely there.

I was selling a cz a couple years ago and I was honest about it being my USPSA limited gun with 20,000 rounds down the pipe, and it still sold for asking price. I don't understand why people have to lie about this stuff.

I can say that all my guns, whether purchased yesterday or 25 years ago are pristine condition. Some shot a lot, some never shot. The dont have ANY handling marks, bumps gouges or dings. Some said they have 20 rounds thru them. To me it looks more like 300000 rounds or people just dont care about their guns and throw them in the back of a truck. Nothing short of unmarked, no blemishes, absolutely no handing marks is "Like New". I put gun socks on everything i own. A 3 dollar investment pays for itself....
If i buy new and there an issue, i can send it back for warranty, if used, your screwed.

spddrcr Why are you looking for a 35? they are everywhere.

10k rounds and just back from the smith getting parts replaced to fix why it wasn't working. But the owner doesn't trust it so he sells it as "like new". In all honesty, a used gun is a used gun to me. Why someone would pay close to MSRP when they could just get a new one for a couple dollars more blows my mind.

Because nobody ever says "Like old" or "Like used".

"Like new" is redundant. If it is "like new" then it is new. If you say it is "like new" and it is not new then it is not "like new". It is "like old". But, if it is old then no need to say it is "like old". Just say old. Forgot were was I going with this. Probably because I am getting like old.
