CA Ammo Laws for 2019 (purchasing) - LAX Ammo video

Here's Dan Kash of LAX Ammunition and LAX Firing Range telling us a little about what to expect come July 1 , 2019.

Don't forget to have a little stash so that you'll not be caught empty-handed when you'd like to purchase self-defense or target ammo after July 1.

Basically, it looks like there will be no "ammo card" requirement, instead there will be a one-time 10-day processing period -if?- you are not already in CA DOJ's "system" with a prior purchase of a firearm.

There will be a $1 fee for every ammunition transaction, and [edit: an eligibility check] that will take maybe 90 secs.

It is entirely possible this post could be a duplicate since the video was done last month.

Does this mean that anyone who legally purchased a pistol is already in the DOJ system or do they have to register separately to be in the system?

I only watched the video once, and Dan talks too fast.

But from what I gather, yes; if you've purchased a firearm (including long guns since 2014), then you're already in "the system". You'll still pay the $1 bg check fee every time you purchase ammunition. They will record caliber and quantity. What they're going to do with that info is anyone's guess... CCW holders and LE are not exempt, either (save for LE if they have a "note").

We should watch the video together, again, but separately.

        Thank the maker!

Thought it was going to be time consuming and intrusive

It is my further understanding ... that if one fails the background check, it can be appealed, with an associated $19 processing fee. What happen if one is rejected again is anyone's guess.

Internet ammo purchases will no longer be permitted IF I UNDERSTAND what is being said at 0:47 of the video. What I'm unclear on is whether it still be allowed to purchase and ship to an FFL vendor (as it is now).

Not necessarily a dupe on the video, but that's been the understanding on this site for a while now...

Thanks, Trapped. I figured as much. I find you always post great info. Thanks again for your help.

I am currently buying ammo on a weekly basis. Just a little at a time, I'm predicting prices going up at least till July 1st. Not sure what I think will happen price-wise afterward.

The big question is: Will Walmart still sell come July, or are they done?

I believe I read somewhere else that Walmart will stop selling ammo IIRC.

I specifically asked the two employees behind the Sporting Goods counter at Walmart about this last week. The one said he'd just renewed his COE. However, neither of them had any, official word on whether Walmart planned to continue with ammo sales or not.

Wow....just an expensive game of "Mother May I?". What a shake down. What's next? Are they going to physically lift every gun owner upside down by the ankles and shake unitl every last cent falls from their pocket?

Seriously, though. I visit California occasionally and always bring at least one handgun to get in some range time. The way I understand it, I'll still be able to buy ammo at a range with my TX license/ID, I just won't be able to leave the range with it, right? Also, so if I want ammo for my handgun while I'm there, I better bring my own, 'cause I ain't getting it there, correct?

Not legal to personally "import" ammunition (for any purpose) since 1/1/2018.

If you do not have a valid CA driver's license (or ID) you will not be able to purchase ammunition EVEN AT A RANGE.
