    BLM shooting during government shutdown

I like to head out to Toomey Hills (BLM) several times a year to do some target shooting. Does anybody have any info as to whether or not it is closed off to vehicles and/or shooting?

    Thank you.

I was at a few BLM places (not Toomey Hills, though) last weekend, all had campers and 4x4'ers, and my wife and I walked around with rifles for several hours without anyone telling us to go home.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

Thank you BFG. Does anyone know about Toomey hills in particular? I know they have several lockable gates that I assume no one is there to open.

If it's locked just park outside of the gate and go inside. If the government shutdown the no one's going to mess with you anyways. Just make sure that you walk in far enough to not be shooting too close to the road.

With the shut down, emergency services are limited and there is no one to perform maintenance or enforce any rules normally set forth.

Found that out when I went backpacking 2 weeks ago through Bear Valley, I was worried about not having purchased a parking permit and fire permit for other trails. Same thing with backpacking last week through Oregon, I didn't have a parking permit but it didn't matter because I didn't get cited/towed away the 4-5 days I was parked there anyway.

Panoche hills up the road was unlocked and open, I would assume Tumey is as well.

Tumey has only two gates to enter the BLM property (other gates are to private land or official access only). The main one closest to I-5 and the one about 6 miles down Panoche Rd. There are a few places with man-gates for entry as well.

If those are locked, then vehicle access is restricted, but it is always open to foot traffic. Target shooting has separate restrictions. You should check before you go.

This will give you the current restrictions: https://www.blm.gov/visit/tumey-hills

Many times we drive to the spot we like near a man-gate and just lift our gear over the fence, setup and start shooting.

Our founding fathers did govt on the side line. It wasn't their full time job.
Many had farms to manage, shipments and sales to supervise.

Without the government, who would take your freedoms and sell them back to you?

unlike the obama shutdowns, trump didn't order the closure of all parks and monuments, thus it may be down to local or state officials to do anything.

that said, i wouldn't be surprised if california closed things just to make trump look bad.
